I've never owned jammers before, I always train in swim trunks. I tried some on (over underwear) at Dick's Sporting Goods last week... tried on both the 34 and 36 (in pants I often find 34 to be small but 36 to be way to big). I was able to squeeze into both, but there was definitely more stretching of the fabric involved with the size 34.

How much are these things supposed to stretch?

I think it depends on the fabric.  I have pairs of polyester, non-stretchy Speedo Endurance+ jammers, and a 34 fits me very snug.  I also have a pair of Speedo lycra jammers, in 34, but I could have easily gotten away with a 32.  With Jammers, you want them to be tight and form fitting, not baggy and parachute-y.  That being said, you also don't want to rip them if you bend over for any reason.  If the 36s won't billow in the water, I'd go with them.

If you aren't embarrassed the first 2-3 times you go to the pool with them on, you should have sized down.

x2 on not having them be too baggy.  When you push off, you don't want them to catch water and peel off, leaving you bottomless at the pool...

If they feel like they are cutting into your legs, probably too small.  If you have loose areas, probably too large.

First of all, I only get poly jammers (which don't stretch as much).  I tend to get one size smaller than my normal pants waist.  They are a little snug, but feel fine in the water.

You could probably go down another size with lycra, but again, I would never BUY lycra, so it's not a factor.

I agree, the poly is a bit harder to get into, but once I am in the water, they feel perfect.  This is something else to take into account.
