Swim
Comments: My usual swim at my usual steady and slow pace. I sighted pretty well and avoided getting involved in too much crowding. Swim included a 150 M run up to the next transition. I felt very comfortable overall and dealt with the breakers coming into the beach pretty well which was an interesting first time experience. What would you do differently?: Start further out to the left of the first/starting buoy. I was swimming against the current somewhat from where I started and at an angle out to sea. The smarter/experienced ocean swimmers started out lined up with the final buoy in the distance (about 50 M to the left of the starting buoy) and swam straight for the last buoy keeping a solid 30-40 M distance from the course buoys along the way. A tip to remember for next year. Ocean was wonderful to swim in for a change, really enjoyed it. Transition 1
Comments: Fastest T1 ever, in and out like I know I can. Happy with this! What would you do differently?: Not much. My next goal in a Sprint is sub 1 minute T1. Bike
Comments: Some very sharp turns and bike handling skills were tested to the max for what was a pretty flat course. The quality of the roads on the course was very poor in some places and I really had to concentrate and choose when to stay in aero/come out and get on the horns to ensure I stayed upright. I'm happy with the performance overall, managed to get some fluids down to get rid of the salt water taste (blegh!) and settled into a rhythm. What would you do differently?: Not much, I'm happy with the ride, passed a few folks, negotiated the course well and avoided crashing on rough roads. Transition 2
Comments: In and out and no messing about. What would you do differently?: Not much, I'm happy with this T2. BUT I forgot to take my Garmin so that's definitely not something I want to repeat. Run
Comments: Kept the legs ticking over and tried to keep up with a guy in my age group who was going at a decent pace. What would you do differently?: Remember the Garmin. 2 races in a row now I've forgotten to grab Garmin from bike in T2. This is a must have for Timberman to pace myself properly. Post race
Warm down: Drank a lot of cold water, had some grapes and relaxed with Elizabeth. What limited your ability to perform faster: This was my fastest sprint for this distance ever, so not much limited by ability right? Well here's the kicker - I don't believe the race results are valid for me (or the rest of the field for that matter). I've never averaged 22.5 on the bike nor averaged 6:40's on a 3.5 mile run, and I don't believe I did in this race either. I don't want or mean in any way to take anything from my fellow competitors, but something is not right with the final results. I had a basic Ironman stopwatch on at the start of the race and I hit start right at the gun, and stop right at the end line so I do know that I finished the course in 1hr 16 mins. However my Garmin did not pick up satellite signal on run, and I forgot it for run, so I cannot cross check bike and run splits unfortunately. I'm sceptical because I know what averaging say 21.5 on the bike and say 7:15 on the run "feels" like and I'd say that's closer to the reality but the results say otherwise. Needless to say I wish I had the empirical evidence to go along with my theory. I've posted a link to results below if anyone reads this, or did the race and is curious. Lets be reasonable here, the last time I averaged 6:40's running for anything I was in college and chasing a Guinness truck. Of course I didn't have a Garmin back then so I could not attest to the veracity of that effort either :). Event comments: Really enjoyed the race, rough bike and dodgy results notwithstanding. For anyone interested in the results check them out here. http://www.jsmultisport.com/race_html/BTT2010/PREOVERALLCOMBINED.ht... If you are interested in why I think the results are way off, just check the top finishers. I do know from talking to my GC Tri friends that the race while small, was deep with some solid talent. If my math is right the winner would have had to average 3:59 to do a 3.5 mile race in 13:59. That's after averaging 27.13 on the bike for 15 miles. 3 sub 4 From seeing his name and results in a few races I know the winner is an excellent triathlete and very fast racer, and this is not to in ANY WAY take away from his accomplishment in winning. I'm merely using his splits as an EXAMPLE ONLY. I'm not sure how this could happen, but it almost seems like the distances in the race were not calculated properly, or folks missed a timing mat somewhere along the course. Overall it is a bit disappointing that the results seem weird. They did need more security around people coming into/out of transition after the race, which was a slight negative. That aside I really enjoyed the race, the location and I will definitely do this race next year. *Update - they adjusted the results and they are now accurate* Last updated: 2010-08-02 12:00 AM

Up at 4 AM, had 2 Larabars and bottle of Infinit and grabbed gear for the 1hr 20 drive to Asbury Park. Found a decent parking spot next to transition and got my packet and set up transition next to an old gutted casino which was remodeled as a walkway. Had about 45 mins to set up and prepare and then 10 min walk to swim start in ocean. I'd a long week of training and felt ok, somewhat fatigued going into the race but adrenalin started to flow which really helped. Chatted with a few racers I knew and wished them luck.
Walked to swim start with Elizabeth and put on the wetsuit and swam out and back to 1st buoy to get used to the breakers. Ocean was awesome and I felt really awake by now and read to swim. Gave Liz a last kiss and off to race start.
