My sources say that he has a broken leg/ribs/etc, and severe head injuries...

I hate hearing about this happening over and over again.

Pulling for Jeff.  Just awful.  From the pictures it looks like the car hit him from behind.  Hoping for the best.

Don't know Jeff, but my prayers go out to him and his family.

This stuff has got to end, but it won't until we get tougher about drunk/distracted driving in this State and get some judges who are willing to hand down meaningful sentences to those who cause harm to others through their own carelessness.

We also need DA's who have a set of balls big enough to charge someone with a crime.

Thoughts and prayers to the family.  It will be interesting to see the cause and how this case is handled.

Agreed. There's an impression near the MIDDLE of the hood and the windshield-- looks like the driver just about drove right into the back of him with the center of his/her car. Just sickening.

License of vehicle - 631-JPK (from the picture).  I should contact a friend who's a County Sheriff.

Why Phil?  Local law enforcement are handling it.

Unconfirmed update is that Lauren Jensen has been released from the hospital with a broken clavicle and Jeff is in the ICU while efforts are being made to reduce brain swelling.

I'm that upset to hear of this, and then seeing those photos, that I have some not-so-pleasant thoughts in my head, I'm sorry to say.

What bothers me is knowing how these things get handled...    nothing happens to the driver.  Sure, there are civil lawsuits, but no real penalties other than the insurance company writing a check.  Not that I think that all motorists who hit cyclists deserve to have the book thrown at them, but when NO ONE gets punished, it sends a very poor message to everyone.

I hope that Jeff gets well soon....    I hope that is family is surrounded by loved ones right now.

Didn't Jeff have a really bad accident during a race a couple of years ago?  I can't remember for sure but I think it was him.

If so, he needs some good gu-gu sent his way!

OMG - I didn't even notice that the first time. That makes me stomach turn. Unbelievable.

Healing thoughts being sent his way.

(::and this is why I've barely been able to get on my brand new bike this summer.... too many stories of cyclists being hit. It's just unthinkable to me that drivers can be that unaware::

And this morning on my ride,  all I could think about on some busier roads is to watch out for cars.  i am always concerned that this could happen to me or anyone else I know.  I try to ride quieter roads - today I had several very kind drivers slow down on Cty I to be cautious.  There are many considerate drivers out there and I wave to each of them in appreciation of their safety.  Those who are not so courteous, I just keep riding, I do not need to stir them up and have it become a bad situation later.

Jeff and lauren are great people - I am still shuddering over this.  I hope they heal quickly. Strong Prayers and thoughts are going out to them and their families.

My prayers go out to Jeff and his family for strength and courage. Prayers to both he and Lauren for speedy recoveries.

Rich: I understand the emotion of this incident, particularly since nearly everyone on this board rides, but the facts aren't out yet, so please don't rush to judgement.

And while acknowledging that all the facts are not in yet, what has been reported is the road (Wisconsin Ave.), direction of travel (eastbound) and time of day (7:30a). I only point this out because sunlight may have played a role in this.

And at the risk of sounding both preachy and callous given the seriousness of this incident and the reality of Jeff and Lauren's injuries, I am convinced more than ever that riding into a rising or setting sun is unwise and unduly dangerous. I weigh this in my route planning and pray that if each of you havent' thought about it before, you consider it now.

I agree with you that all facts are not in.  However, DA's and Judges don't do enough.  When I was hit two years ago, the guy's license had been suspended so he was driving without a valid license.  I was hit in the open in daylight so he was obviously distracted.  NOTHING happend to the driver.  He got no ticket for distracted driving (claimed sun was in his eyes, but we could prove otherwise) and while he was cited for driving without a license, the DA dropped the ticket because he paid his outstanding fines and got the license reinstated.  So he got no fines or tickets whatsoever for causing the accident.  I hear the same thing over and over again that unless the driver kills the cyclist, nothing happens to them.

I have ridden that route many times. It is basically a frontage road off hwy 16. Of course this can happen anywhere. My thoughts and prayers are with Jeff and his family.

Even then, nothing happens...   look at the guy who killed Brett Netke on fathers day...
