Subject: Flying after a bone scan?
Has anyone ever flown after having a bone scan? I had one on Friday and will be flying on Monday. The tech told me that I probably won't be radioactive then but gave me a letter just to be safe. Has anyone done this before? Did you just give them the letter in the security line before going through the scanner?

I've been drinking and peeing tons hoping to get it all out of me so I can't imagine it will be a problem, but I'm just wondering what others have done.

I had more time between my last bone scan and the subsequent flight, but I know a little about how the Personal Radiation Detectors work and a little more about how TSA screws things up...I mean how TSA runs a tight ship at the airports.

The radiation levels for the stuff you're injected with are low to begin with, and they dissapate relatively quickly. I'm going to take a guess that the radiation emitted by the concrete in the airport's building materials will be higher, but I could be wrong. I'd be a little surprised if you set off a PRD, but they'll just do a private search of you, perhaps ask some idiotic questions, and then call in someone who actually has some remote idea of what they're doing. (is it obvious that I don't like TSA?).

I'd suggest getting to the airport a little earlier than you'd first planned so that any potential delays through "security" don't affect your personal schedule signficantly.

The other part of this is what you did to necessitate a bone scan. I'm guessing it hurt. My condolences.

I would not worry about it.  At all.  You get more radiation from a regular xaray than a bone scan

Ok, great, thank you! I will have my letter with me just in case but I'm not going to worry about it. I think you're right the that I won't be very radioactive by then. I always find security/the airport an interesting adventure anyway.

I had to get the scan to check for a pelvic stress fracture that my sports med doc suspects. I'll be in shock if I actually do have one. The pain isn't too bad but I've had a weird groin injury that doesn't seem to get better for nearly a month now. Now there's a deep mild ache whenever I walk a little or even from sitting. I felt some pain when she pressed near the pubis symphysis so I ended up getting an ultrasound and bone scan. I'm crossing my fingers and toes that it's "just" muscular or even tendon stuff because apparently a stress fracture would be a minimum of 13 weeks off. I'm already getting depressed after only a couple off now. And to think, I posted about feeling "burnt out" from running awhile back. I don't think I'll be complaining like that again! (Whew. I think I needed to vent. Sorry!)

I"ve working in the medical imagine area for 20+ years.. Even before we were as safty cautious as we are now, we wouldn't allow injectioned patients around any pregnant women in the U/S dept.    It's most likely to late but get a letter or some documentation just in case you need it

Thanks! I have one that I'm bringing with me. I'm glad I asked the tech about it.

I had the injection Friday morning at 8 am so I'm hoping it will be out of me by then. I think he said it would probably take 35 hours to be out of my system, but now I can't remember.
