![]() Swim
Comments: Ha ha, got in and the guy started a 5-second countdown right away! I took two strokes, thought, "wha?" and realized I hadn't pulled my goggles down from my forehead! Finished the length, took 5 seconds to put them on properly, and was completely thrown. Couldn't settle down and find my breathing again, and was passed on the third length. Then I panicked, as I feared I would. Flipped onto my back and proceeded to backstroke the majority of the rest of the swim. Fortunately my backstroke is strong, relative to my front crawl, so I probably didn't lose much in the way of time in the pool. Thanks to a spectacularly impressive mistake in the recording of my swim time, though, the race results show me as a champion swimmer. Ha. What would you do differently?: Not panic. :P ![]() Transition 1
Comments: This part was surprisingly easy. I was so relieved to be out of the pool and on the bike! What would you do differently?: Get a race belt. I pinned my bib to the sleeveless shirt that was in the race package, but I'm not a big fan of wearing race shirts on race day. Hadn't earned it at that point, you know? ![]() Bike
Comments: The first part of the first loop was a little hard, but things seemed to get easier after that. My heart rate was sky-high after my dismal swim, and I went too easy on the bike to compensate. People are so nice! The run route was alongside the bike route, and I got a lot of encouraging words from fast racers who looked like they were out for a morning training run instead of competing in a race. I would like to be one of those girls someday... :) What would you do differently?: Learn how to spin properly. With some decent training and several hundred more miles under my belt, I think I could drop some significant time here. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: No problems here. ![]() Run
Comments: I thought I had practiced this enough, but clearly there are many more bricks in my future. A lot of it was mental; there was a bit of a hill coming out of the transition that I just couldn't make myself run up, and then the road looked like it just kept going up and up and up...I was passed by seven girls in the first kilometre or so as I struggled to get my legs moving. After the first five minutes, though, things got better. I got a pretty good pace going, and downhills on the returning half were kind. What would you do differently?: Many, many more bricks. I lost several minutes here too. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Gatorade, a piece of chocolate cake and bit of a granola bar. Stayed around for the last person to come in, and clapped for the age-group awards. What limited your ability to perform faster: The extra weight I'm still packing around, lack of conditioning, lack of experience. I'm all fired up to do this one again next year! Event comments: This was a great learning experience in a safe, friendly environment. The volunteers were awesome, the other racers so kind and helpful. The woman beside me in transition showed me how to rack my bike and gave me some tips on how to set up my stuff. I'm looking forward to coming back next year. Last updated: 2005-08-02 12:00 AM

I was already awake when the alarm went off at 4:45 am, having slept maybe 4 decent hours. I choked down a bagel w PB and two tall glasses of water. CM stumbled out of bed to take a shower, while I put on my tri suit and proceeded to gnaw off my right hand. God, I was so nervous. I triple-checked that I packed everything, and just before we left, I gulped down half a cup of coffee.
The race is less than a 10-minute drive from my house, but you better believe I was there 15 minutes before the transition officially opened. :P Got a good spot on the end of a rack, and spent five minutes setting up.
Found YT, who is a fast age-grouper. She's the one who encouraged me to do this race as my first, so I clung to her for awhile and soaked up words of encouragement.
Hmm. Maybe I should have warmed up?
