Pre-race routine:

I was already awake when the alarm went off at 4:45 am, having slept maybe 4 decent hours. I choked down a bagel w PB and two tall glasses of water. CM stumbled out of bed to take a shower, while I put on my tri suit and proceeded to gnaw off my right hand. God, I was so nervous. I triple-checked that I packed everything, and just before we left, I gulped down half a cup of coffee.

The race is less than a 10-minute drive from my house, but you better believe I was there 15 minutes before the transition officially opened. :P Got a good spot on the end of a rack, and spent five minutes setting up.

Found YT, who is a fast age-grouper. She's the one who encouraged me to do this race as my first, so I clung to her for awhile and soaked up words of encouragement.
Event warmup:

Hmm. Maybe I should have warmed up?

Comments:

Ha ha, got in and the guy started a 5-second countdown right away! I took two strokes, thought, "wha?" and realized I hadn't pulled my goggles down from my forehead! Finished the length, took 5 seconds to put them on properly, and was completely thrown. Couldn't settle down and find my breathing again, and was passed on the third length.

Then I panicked, as I feared I would. Flipped onto my back and proceeded to backstroke the majority of the rest of the swim. Fortunately my backstroke is strong, relative to my front crawl, so I probably didn't lose much in the way of time in the pool.

Thanks to a spectacularly impressive mistake in the recording of my swim time, though, the race results show me as a champion swimmer. Ha.
What would you do differently?:

Not panic. :P
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

This part was surprisingly easy. I was so relieved to be out of the pool and on the bike!
What would you do differently?:

Get a race belt. I pinned my bib to the sleeveless shirt that was in the race package, but I'm not a big fan of wearing race shirts on race day. Hadn't earned it at that point, you know?
Bike
  • 48h 09m
  • 12.43 miles
  • 0.26 mile/hr
Comments:

The first part of the first loop was a little hard, but things seemed to get easier after that. My heart rate was sky-high after my dismal swim, and I went too easy on the bike to compensate.

People are so nice! The run route was alongside the bike route, and I got a lot of encouraging words from fast racers who looked like they were out for a morning training run instead of competing in a race. I would like to be one of those girls someday... :)
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to spin properly. With some decent training and several hundred more miles under my belt, I think I could drop some significant time here.
Transition 2

Comments:

No problems here.
Run
  • 37h 27m

Comments:

I thought I had practiced this enough, but clearly there are many more bricks in my future. A lot of it was mental; there was a bit of a hill coming out of the transition that I just couldn't make myself run up, and then the road looked like it just kept going up and up and up...I was passed by seven girls in the first kilometre or so as I struggled to get my legs moving. After the first five minutes, though, things got better. I got a pretty good pace going, and downhills on the returning half were kind.
What would you do differently?:

Many, many more bricks. I lost several minutes here too.
Post race
Warm down:

Gatorade, a piece of chocolate cake and bit of a granola bar. Stayed around for the last person to come in, and clapped for the age-group awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The extra weight I'm still packing around, lack of conditioning, lack of experience. I'm all fired up to do this one again next year!

Event comments:

This was a great learning experience in a safe, friendly environment. The volunteers were awesome, the other racers so kind and helpful. The woman beside me in transition showed me how to rack my bike and gave me some tips on how to set up my stuff. I'm looking forward to coming back next year.

Hey I was out watching the race. I wish I had known who you were. I could have cheered you on. It sounds like your first tri was a lot of fun. Did they ever figure out your swim time?

I keep meaning to send you some of those cycling routes, but I have to look up the names of the roads. Ask Laura, I often ride like...oops I think we were supposed to turn at that last street. Hey instead of me sending you routes, why don't you come for a ride without sometime and I can show you the routes.

Hi Jen,

No, I think the swim time is permanently screwed up, but it was at least 10 minutes longer than what is posted, and that would be optimistic too. It was definitely a fun event, and I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you in person!

No worries on the routes; after you mentioned that there were some in Richmond and out in the valley, I started looking around, and I've mapped out a few that I think will work for the next few months. I would love to take you up on that offer for a group ride, but I'm still in no shape to keep up with anyone but myself. Be ready for me to start politely bothering you in the spring, though. I fully intend to spend the next several months working on my cycling and running speed and endurance!

Hi Laura,

Were you the girl in a light-coloured top who was stopped on the side of the hill? You were just getting on your bike as I was passing, and you zoomed right past, looking very determined. I was very impressed!

I live just on the other side of the bridge, near the PNE. Haven't found a pool I really like yet, unfortunately. I used to swim (ages ago) at the YWCA downtown when I had a membership--lovely ozone pool--but this summer I've been doing a mix of Kits pool, for its length, the New Brighton pool because it's so close, and White Pine Beach near Buntzen, because the lake is really clean and nicer than Buntzen itself. If you work downtown, I definitely recommend the Y; I'm thinking of joining again this winter.

And now I'm all excited about the idea of getting to ride with other people!

Yeah come out and join us tomorrow night. White Pine Beach is at Sasamat Lake, so you are both talking about the same place. Don't worry Laura, Krista waited for me last week. This week I plan on practicing my drafting. You're the draftee.

Peanut, what's your next tri?

Oh, I would like to, but I've committed to Wednesday night runs with a friend who is getting back into running again. Swimming as a group sounds like fun, though. What's your usual workout? CM and I might be hitting the lake this evening, in fact--he does the trail run around the lake while I try to make it to the bridge on the far side without stopping (hasn't happened yet).

My next tri? I was thinking about the one at UBC on Sep 18, but now that I have one under my belt, I'm leaning towards holding off until March for the UBC Tri/Du. I'm thinking about signing up for the Victoria half-marathon in October, and I wouldn't be able to train enough to do both. I dunno. While I like the idea of getting another tri in before the end of the year, I suspect the times won't be much better, and I'm kind of in love with the idea of training steadily over the winter and impressing myself with newer, faster times in the spring, ya know?

Heh, I felt a bit of a dork wearing the shirt, because I knew it totally marked me as a newbie. :P Leah, are you doing the Pacific Spirit Tri? I'm wavering on that one...
