Subject: 1st Annual DeSwimber Challenge
So Movember is over.  It's cold and daylight is slim... What do you do?  You hop in the pool and DeSwimber!

15step and I are issuing BT'ers a 500 Yard Challenge.

Over the next week swim a 500 yard Time Trial (as fast as you can).  Submit the results and your end of the month goal to me in one of the 2 ways listed below.  The info will make its way to a google doc spreadsheet.  Work your butt off the next 4 weeks to get to your goal.  The person with the greatest % decrease on their TT gets braggin rights for the year and a great swim base for the rest of the winter.

Two ways to submit your initial time and goal time:
1) PM me or
2) reply to the post for public accountability

Let me know if there are any questions.

Take care and swim hard y'all!

Great point!  Meters (long or short course) works for me.  It shouldn't affect the percent change too much.

Just found this converter (although, i think it's backwards as far as its "from___ - to___"... but still gets pretty accurate)
http://www.swimaz.com/tools/timeconverter/

I also just added the pool type to the google docs form.

This challenge sounds good to me since I am going to make this a swim focused month. I would like to better my 500 PR so will do a time trial tomorrow and see where I am currently at.

Ok, got in my 500 TT tonight and so that I have my feet held to the fire I will post my results for all to see (I guess anyone could look in my logs to). Went 6:25 and have a goal of going 6:10 by the end of the month. So have some work to do to get there.

I'm still in - will do TT on Monday (it will be meters).  Hopefully I will be able to breathe by then.

Yeah, so I didn't make it to the pool today.  Hopefully tomorrow.  I can breathe better now, though, so my time won't be a complete sandbag.

Solid swim.  I think that 6:10 looks pretty appetizing and I'm definitely gunning for it!

What's everyone doing to get the ball rolling this week?

I was at first a little disappointed with my 9:10, but I'm actually surprised I didn't lose more with the 6 months I took off after my HIM.  I think I should be able to regain some speed fairly quickly.  This week will be 3+ swims (I know, it's a loftly goal. lol) and maybe break out the pull buoy.  And maybe even swim more than 1200 in one session.

That's what ya gotta do!  Put it in perspective and make something happen (with pull buoys).

Thanks Cody! I am planning on getting in the pool at least once a day over then next few weeks starting this evening. I have an injured foot so I might as well try and get my swim times down. Don't know if I will meet my goal but will give it a shot.

Do not get disappointed. Focus on form all the time, get in the yards and the times will come down probably faster than you think it will.

7:02 for 500 TT...ugh.  I let things go, but that is just this side of sad.  Areas of improvement:

  • Flip turns - sharp for the first hundred, then I did not get that sharp crisp turn with a strong push off.  Worth 7 to 10 seconds.
  • Form break down from 250 - 350.  Started to push to hold a pace and form tightened up.  Also, I need to make sure I get a good catch on all strokes and not take a stroke off now and then.  Smooth things out and rotate the hips.  Worth 5 seconds
  • General form was average at best.  Not sure what i can get in a few weeks but I will say 5 seconds.

Goal will be 6:40 on Dec. 30.  5.2% improvement.

If anyone can, the captin can.  Let Maria get ahold of ya and you'll definitely get there!

Also... sounds like a nice competition between you and 15step.  Get it y'all.

Got in another TT tonight since I only had 30 minutes to swim and improved by 6 seconds so happy with that! 500 is a painful distance, reminds me of running an 800 where the bear jumps on your back at 600 meters.

Did another TT today and had a good improvement over last week. Just have a few more seconds to go and 2 weeks to do it.

I finally got in the pool and am here to admit that I've failed mightily in the Deswimber Challenge.  However, the challenge did accomplish the goal of getting me into the pool (and hopefully the habit) so that is a good thing.

I didn't do a time trial but pretty sure I was 9:45ish for 500 meters which translates into roughly 8:55:20 for 500 yards (I think).  Poor show.  Will try to get an additional swim this week and retest next week.
