Subject: McFuzz's Mentor Group 2011 - CLOSED

I'm McFuzz (Mike).

Who am I?  I'm a lot of things.  Professionally, I'm an engineer (Electrical).  I'm a 46-year-old family man (details to follow).  I'm a Boy Scout leader and spend a lot of time outdoors with kids.  I was active in high-school, running track and cross-country and worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor, but never swam competitively (to be honest...I still don't swim "competitively")  I did my first triathlon in 2005 after getting ready for a backpacking trip with my son.  I was hooked.  Hooked enough to recruit my training buddy for a second tri in 2005 and signed up for a half-ironman as my 2006 goal.  Did a few races in 2006, one in 2007, none in 2008 (another backpacking trip), and Ironman Coeur D'Alene in 2009.  I Did-Not-Start (DNS) my half-ironman in 2010 due to an untimely illness.  That's OK, I ran my first marathon (Flying Pig) in 2010.

I'm happily married for almost 24 years now.  We have four boys, 23, 20, 17, and 17 (yes, twins), and now a grandson (7 weeks).  Being a grandpa is great!

2010 was a year for running.  I've logged over 1100 miles running.  I completed my first marathon (Flying Pig) with my training partner, Natalie.  I was signed up for Steelhead (Half-Ironman) but didn't race (illness).  I ran my second marathon and third ultramarathon on a Friday night/Saturday morning Halloween weekend and my third marathon in December.

2011 will be  another Ironman year (Vineman, July 30), work permitting.  I'll try to get some running in as well, tentatively looking to do the Pittsburgh Marathon in May and Marine Corp Marathon in October.

My training philosophy is largely a reflection of life.  A little structure, a lot of chaos, and a lot of smiling and laughing.  I swim/bike/run because I like the activity and I like to eat.  I do like to dream, and I'm a firm believer in identifying my innermost goals and figuring out a way to make them happen.  I know I'm capable of a 12-hour Ironman and that's what will drive my training in 2011.

Weightloss?  I'll shed a few pounds as training picks up.  I lost 35 pounds getting ready for that 2005 backpacking trip and have kept most of it off the last 5 years.

Why mentor, and why join my group?  I mentor because I like helping people grow.  As a swim instructor, it was all about releasing that untapped talent.  Hasn't really changed in 30 years.  I mentored in 2007 and 2010 and most of those protege's are still on BT and still juggling life and fitness pursuits.  As a mentor, my goal is to help you identify what you really want and help you find a way to accomplish that goal.  I'm a proponent of protecting your goals and dreams as some of your most cherished posessions.  Doesn't matter whether your goal is qualifying for Kona or finishing a 5K, it's yours and you're the only one who can make it happen.

If you're interested, here's what I'll ask of you:
Accept the challenge to help others in the group grow.
Focus on positives.
Spend some time to identify YOUR SPECIFIC GOALS.
Introduce yourself to the group
    Name
    Background (family, career, etc.)

I would like to join this group!  I'm looking to do my first oly this year and will need some major help as I've only done 2 mini triathlons so far.

Bio:
My name is Shannon and I am a 29 year old mother of 2, one 10 month old and one 2 year old.  My first tri was 3 months after my son was born and it was my way of trying to get back into shape after having him.  I have been an athlete all my life playing pretty much every sport.  My main sport is soccer which I played for the University of Northern Colorado.  After college I commissioned into the Air Force and was a Contracting Officer which is a fancy way of saying that I do 'combat shopping'.  I have stayed fit easily all my life until I had my boys.  I love my food so I am still needing to loose about 15lbs. to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight and hope to loose another 5 if possible to be able to race at my best.

Right now I am a stay at home Mom and life is pretty crazy with 2 little ones around especially with my husband deployed.  I love structure, competition and working out.  I enjoy pushing myself once I'm out the door and at the gym but getting out the door is hard sometimes.  Because of my background, I am fine with the running aspect (I'm not super fast but I do alright), my biking is not the greatest and I by far am the worst at swimming.  I have been swimming on average 3 days a week for 2.5 months and it's getting easier but I am still soooo slow!

Experience:
Like I said I have only done 2 mini triathlons.  I did get my sister and brother to do the second one with me and I think they're both hooked now too.

Goals:
Complete my first Olympic distance triathlon (no specific race picked out yet - I'll be searching for one soon)
Lose 15 lbs.

Hello Mike/all, I'd like to join the group if its ok. A little about me:

NAME: Nate

STORY: My old man has been doing tri’s since 2006. I volunteered at IMLP ’05 but didn’t get to actually experience it until 2008 when I was there as a spectator, not a volunteer. IMLP ’08 was THE RAIN IM. Rained from 7:20 AM and didn’t stop until at least 10:45PM. Watching the athletes made me think “Why am I cheering and not doing this myself? If 2,400 people can do it in the pouring rain, I can too!” So I went out at signed up for IMLP ’09 with no tri-experience to speak of.

I had absolutely no experience with anything prior to late 2008. I hated running, had only biked around town as a kid and recreational swimming. I was very active in high school playing baseball, football, basketball and weight lifting throughout.

2011 will be my 3rd season. I’ve completed an IM and HIM as well as a 5-6 sprints and 2 Oly’s. The 2010 HIM was my best race despite a complete lack of training. I was working approximately 70 hrs a week including travel and was absolutely DRAINED!

I want 2011 to be my best season and see how far I can push myself. I have set some pretty high goals for myself that with dedication and some help I am confident I can accomplish.

FAMILY STATUS: Single with girlfriend

CURRENT TRAINING: Haven’t been logging anything. Typically getting about 3-5 short runs in a week as well as a few trainer rides. I’ve swam 3 times total (2 at races) since IMLP in 09! This all needs to improve and will. I will loosely follow a 30wk IM training program that starts the day after Christmas.

THIS YEAR'S RACES(2010): 1 Olympic, IM 70.3 Syracuse

2011 RACES:
  4 booked so far. ½ Marathon-April, Olympic Tri-June, IMLP-July, IM 70.3 Syracuse?-September. Will probably throw in a couple local Sprints/Oly’s and/or another HIM

WEIGHTLOSS: I have about 20lbs to drop to get down to “normal” race weight, but would like to drop a total of 25lbs.

WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE:
I have gained some knowledge to share with others in the group over my 2 years but have plenty more to learn. My issue is getting off my butt and doing something, finding that extra motivation. Need some help with and ideas for eating healthier and cutting out the sweets, ice cream just tastes WAYYY too good though!! I could use someone willing to call me at 5:30 AM EST to get me up so I can run, it would be greatly appreciated!!  Also, Mike, if you wouldn't mind traveling to Albany once a week for some swim lessons that'd be cool too!! Tongue out

Bio

Married to my beautiful wife for 22 years. We have a daugher that is 15 and a son that is 11.  I will struggle to balance work and fitness.  My family enjoys traveling

Experience
I started 2010 about 75 pounds heavier than today. I began the C25K with a goal of running a 5K in June.  I have since run 3 more, and usually each one is a minute faster than the past. I am now hooked on running for the first time ever.  I typically run 3-4 times per week in very unstructured manner.  I have always enjoyed bicycling, but will need a lot of swim training.

Name:  Rod(age 43 yo)

Story:  I have always been an active athletic person.  As I have gotten older I still want to remain athletic in physical sports but the toll of playing football has taken it's effect and now hurt knees, ankles and elbows later I can't play some of the sports I really enjoy.  I was told I need a knee replacement but my age, size and activity level will not allow me to get one.  I knew I had to lose weight so originally thought of bodybuilding as I need a goal or challenge to help inspire me.  Started down that path but decided I would go another route while leaving that option open in my mind.  Was watching the Kona Ironman on tv, posted something on Facebook and a friend said I should give it a try.  Being the competitive person that I am I decided I would give it a go and found a local sprint coming up this summer.

Family Status:  Married (10 yrs in Feb2011) with two children (son age 9, daughter age 6)

Current training:  I just joined a Crossfit gym and have a membership to another that is paid for by my company that has a pool.  I joined this new gym as it had a better variety of equipment plus it is 24 hours.  I found a training plan for doing a tri online that is 10 weeks long and will be following that.

2010 Races:  I did two 5k's this summer and have only run a total of 5 5k races in my life.

2011 Races:  Right now I know I will be doing 1 sprint tri and at least 2 5k races

2011 Goals:  Weight loss-  Probably the main reason I am getting into all of this.  I am currently 6'5" and 315.  By my first tri in June I would like to be at 265. Racing- My two big goals are to finish a sprint tri and run a 5k under 30 minutes.

I am really looking forward to this experience and learning from those who have been in this position I find myself now.  I may not be able to offer technical advice but I can lend support to assist the others in reaching their goals.

I'd like to join, follow little bio

Born in Brazil, moved to US in 2001, since then, lived in Miami, FL; Knoxville, TN; Orlando, FL; and now in Mooresville, NC,

33 years old, married 10 years and 2 kids (15yo boy, 7 yo girl)

Little overweight 6'2" and 240 lbs

Never a big athlete, but up until 1997 I had a bicycle as only form of transportation, i 97 it was stolen and I then bought a motorcycle, never did any exercise again.

Fast forward to 2010, my little sister got married in May and after almost 10 years I went back to Brazil, saw all relatives and saw how big I become (I was at 260 at the time) when I got back decided to loose weight and with little money run was a first option, started the C25K program and in August did the "Mooresville 5K" my time was 30:09. not bad for someone that in may wasn't able to run more than 20 seconds.

August I also got myself a road bike at bikedirect, and started to ride I would run 3 miles or ride 20 5x a week I did this until Mid Oct when the cold mornings kept me in bed.

I work at a Mall so November and December I work very long hours and didn'd do any biking or running.
My goals for 2011 are loose some weight (get to 200), do a duathlon (I can swim, but have no where to train or practice) and depends how it goes run the Charlotte Marathon next December.

OK...first thing is for each of you to add one another to your list of friends here.

Go to settings (the little wrench icon at the top).
Select the Training Blog Customization tab
Select the Friends tab
either type in the screen name directly, or use the ... button to look for someone (so if you ... and type "fuzz" I'll show up in the list).

You can also add a hyperlink to this thread.  Copy the URL, go back to your Training Blog Customization page and select the dashboard tab.  Somewhere in here, type something that'll make sense to you (I'll probably use something creative, like "McFuzz's 2011 Thread") highlight it, and then click on the little chain icon which brings up a hyperlink window where you can paste the previously copied hyperlink.

Hi Mike,

Ann-Marie here, I'd like to join the group too.

This will be my second season of triathlon.  In 2010, I competed in 4 sprints and had plans for 2 olys in Sept/Oct., but broke my ribs a week out from the first oly - that put an abrupt end to the season!  In addition to the tris, I ran 3 half marys and almost 2 marathons.  The 2d mary was cut short by illness.  In 2011, i hope to complete 2-3 olys and 4-5 sprints.  I will also run a few 1/2 marys and 1-2 marys.

Right now, other than my german shepherd, I am single.  The good news with that is I have time to train.  We won't talk about the bad with that   Professionally, i am an attorney with a law enforcement agency.  The agency promotes fitness and we have an on-site gym, so that also helps with the workouts.

Based upon this years races, it is clear I need to spend more time on the bike.   It also probably wouldn't hurt if i upgraded my bike - my current bike is a circa 1991 Trek 1200.  But the real issue is that I need to come up with a plan that allows me to keep my running plans without ignoring time in the saddle.

This looks like it will be a fun group.  I look forward to learning from all of you.

Ann-Marie

NAME: Jason

STORY: 32 years old.  3 years ago i was about to turn 30 and made a commitment to lose weight.  january 2008 i was 6' tall weighing in at 228 lbs, eating like a horse, but not working like one.  so i cut back my intake and lost 35 lbs over 9 months then hit a wall.  i knew i needed exercise if i wanted to lose any more weight.  thanksgiving rolled around and i was talking with my BIL who was visiting from VA and he said he started training for triathlons.  i thought it sounded really cool, i always loved to bike, i could tolerate running, and the local high school has lap swims in the morning i could get to. picked me up a used bike from craigslist, hit the pool and the road, and lost 13 more lbs on my way to my first triathlon June 2009.  since then, i've completed 7 races.  5 sprints, 1 olympic, and 1 HIM, along with various 5k's.

FAMILY: married 11 years. 2 kids, ages 5&7.  my daughter will be doing the kids race at Musselman this summer when we are there for my70.3 race.  my son cant wait to do his first either, he's just a little too young yet.  my wife had completed her first 2 5k's this fall and is contemplating a sprint tri this august.  i think my dedication to this sport has slowly spread through my family and a few other friends as well.

CURRENT TRAINING:  as of now im just trying to maintain a decent run base through winter.  i didnt have a treadmill until this fall and my run totally droped off last winter, making things more harder to get ramped back up again in the spring.  i run 3-5x/week, swim 2x/week, and bike when i can (mostly on the trainer).

2010 races: local sprint tri in June, i really wanted to redeem myself at this race.  it was my first ever race the year before and i had a horrible swim which cost me dearly and i wanted to come back from that.  i went from 56/89 in 2009, to 15/78 in 2010, knocking off around 25 minutes from my previous time.
i went for my first Oly this past august, i knew i had to do a longer distance race to prepare me mentally for Savageman 70.0 in September.  i ended up 15th or 16th OA and got 3rd in AG.
Savageman 70.0 - well, that's another story.  i finished about MOP overall and was about 6 minutes off my projected time due to a slower than expected run.

2011 races: same sprint to start off the year as before, then Musselman 70.3, Riverstock Oly, and Savageman 70.0 again. maybe another sprint thrown in there somewhere.

WEIGHT LOSS: i have lost a maximum of 48 lbs, i've put 5 back on and have kept it there for the last 1.5 years.  i plan to lose 10 more again for this springs first race and stay at 175-178 lbs throughout race season.

WHAT WOULD MAKE ME A GOOD MENTEE???  well, ive gone from the couch to completing a few events.  ive lost a good deal of weight and kept it off.  i know what i have to do about that.  i train consistently and log ALL of my workouts.  i can share advice on what has worked for me, and i still look for new ideas too.  i love this sport and what it has taught me thus far (i admit that i still hardly know a thing).  being accountable is a great motivator.  and i love to get advice on what works good for training, as well as racing.  does that make me a good mentee??

I would love to join this group if there is still room!!!   I was a part of Newbzz's group last time and it was such a huge help for me.  Last year was my first season and I accomplished 3 sprint tris.  Will be training for an olympic and half marathon this season, so I am sure I will need much help and encouragement.  I am getting ready for a run now and will post my bio in a little while.  So excited!!!!

Hi Mike,
My name is Susie and I'd like to join the group, but feel I must explain a few things.
I was a mentor here on BT for two years.  This year I decided that I didn't have the time necessary to be a good mentor (I'm actually mentoring two new teachers at the school where I teach). But I thought I would miss being part of a group. When I read your bio I thought we had a lot in common so...here I am.

I am 49 years old. Married 24 years with two boys ages 20 and 18. My family is also active in scouting.  I was a den leader for my boys when they were cub scouts.  Both of my boys are now Eagle Scouts.   I am an Early Childhood special education teacher, so I am on winter break right now (thus this middle of the day post).

I have been involved in triathlon since the summer of 2005.  I had always enjoyed an active lifestyle and had been a runner for many years, but in my late 30's I began to have some health issues.  Within 5 years I was diagnosed with asthma, interstitial cystitis ( a chronic bladder disease), and Crohn's Disease.  I thought my active days were over.  After a time of feeling sorry for myself,  I  began to educate myself about my conditions and made some radical changes.  Found new doctors, changed my diet (I am wheat, diary, corn and peanut free).  I also began running again.  I had always wanted to do a triathlon and in July 2005 I did a little local sprint race.  The minute I crossed the finish line I was hooked!  Since then I have completed in 14 triathlons, all distances.  I have done IMWI twice (2008 and 2010).  I also qualified for Boston and ran that in 2010. (I have logged 1097 miles this year).

My goals and races (so far) for 2011: I have a 10k in Feb. (winter races in Chicago are always interesting) I'm running the St. Louis marathon April 10.  I will also be doing an Oly in late June and a HIM in July, on my 50th birthday!  Will probably throw in a few more races, running or otherwise.  My goals for each race are to improve my times.  My overall goal is to maintain my fitness and health.  I do triathlon because it has helped  me to feel so much better, physically and mentally. It has become a lifestyle for me.

PS: I finally got my husband to take up running.  He did his first 5k in November and will be running a 5k in St. Louis while I run the marathon.  Trying to get him in the pool.  Now that will take a bit more work.

A little structure...a lot of chaos...sounds like the mentor for me!

My name is Heather.  I'm 28 years old, mother of 2 boys (ages 4 and 2).  I'm finishing up my LAST semester in college , pursuing my BS in exercise and sports science.  I also teach fitness classes. My life is chaos and I love it!

I've been a runner for about 4 years now, I've got 4 full marathons, 8 half marathons, and countless shorter races under my belt.  2010 was my first year in triathlons, I went from feeling like I was going to drown after one 25 yard lenght of the pool, to my first tri (local sprint with 300 yard pool swim) and then second (Irongirl Columbia, longer sprint, 0.6 mile open water swim).  I'm HOOKED!

I've had the AMAZING honor of being selected to be on the 2011 Team Trakkers age group triathlon team.  And thus, I'm most definately donig my first olympic, first 70.3....and totally eyeballing my first full.  If I do, it will be Rev 3 in Cedar Point, Sept 11.  This gives me another month or two to really think about it.   My husband is on board,  I'm mentally and physically committed to it....I just wonder if it's a silly thing to attempt in only my second season of triathlon.    Then again, there is never much rhyme or reason to what I do in the endurance world, haha!

Currently, I'm midway through training for marathon #5 (Myrtle Beach marathon Feb 19th) and I'm slowly working on getting some base on the bike and in the pool.

Anyway, that's me in a nutshell! Totally looking forward to this experience!
