Subject: ITU World Championships (Sprint distance)
Hey... looking for some help with figuring out the rules for the ITU World Championship Sprint Triathlon this September... specifically about bikes... I have read the rules and it appears that tri bikes are allowed in this race... the course may not be conducive to a tri bike but can anyone confirm that you can ride a dedicated tri bike in that event? Undecided

You can.  I did the race in Budapest and there were a ton of tri bikes.  But there was also a ton of road bikes (including mine).    Just double check the specs on the length of the bars in front of your fork and the nose of your seat in front of your crank.  Other than that, you should be good to go.

ITU  is only draft legal for Elites.  Not for AG'ers.

Also, for 2011 you will want to make sure that they have either gotten rid of or won't be enforcing the rule they had last year about all aerobars being bridged. 

However, it is my understanding that this was a translation issue and some of the draft legal rules were included in the AG rules.  Basically any standard bike that would be legal at a USAT event will be legal at an ITU AG event.

oh! im sorry i didnt realize that. i race junior elite on some circuit races and they enforce the bike rule there so i didnt think ITU endorsed any form of non-draft legal racing besides the races they have at EDRs. sorry for the misinformation and good luck!!!

So if I understand this... in a AG ITU event... drafting is not legal and any kind of bike can be used?

Here are the rules.  Check out the bike section starting on page 17.  I don't think ANY kind is legal, but they aren't quite as strict as you think.  And no, drafting is not legal.  And they will put you in the penalty box.
