Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi everybody, New to the sport this year. I'm 36 w/ a beatiful wife and 3 wonderful children, whom are all my motivation to get & stay healthy. I signed up for my first Dual in Jan, which I ran in July. The Waterloo Duathlon was a great time and had a great spirit, I am now hooked. Having events to train for really keeps me on track. I have signed up for two more events this year, both Dual's. Hopefully this fall/winter I can get some swimming lessons/ training and try a tri next summer. My goal is to work up to a 1/2 IM in '07. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome Nick! There's a great group from SE Michigan here! A bunch of us met up for a ride a couple of weeks ago out at Kensington and everyone was really terrific. I am new to Triathons myself and everyone here has been very welcoming, supportive and helpful. You will get a lot of good information. There are a bunch of Masters swim programs around if you are interested in picking up your swimming. However, if you are brand new to swimming I would suggest lessons first. Technique is hugely important. You can swim much farther and faster with less effort if you have the stroke down. Sorry, swimming is my sport so I love to talk about it! Anyway, welcome to BT!!! |

Be careful about drivers - they have absolutely no clue about how not to hit a cyclist! (ALWAYS wear your helmet.) Welcome to BT. It's a great group of people to train with. Sometimes you even get to meet them! :-) Gwendal |

![]() | ![]() Hello! I'm from Michigan too, Tecumseh. I work in Ann Arbor. I am planning to participate at Waterloo next year. Where are the other races you have planned this year? |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the welcome. Kensington is a great park though I have only ridden MTB trails there. Having seen the swim course layout at the Waterloo tri, a 1/2 mile swim seems a very daunting task. But I have grown up in/ near water throughout my youth so hopefully a couple of refresher sessions will allow me to start training in the pool for it. Could you fill me in on what a Masters swim program is and where I might get some info about them? Thanks, And stay healthy! |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the Welcome, I ALWAYS wear my helmet (got to be a good role model for the yout's). And you a spot on about the drivers around here. I assume they are out to get me and ride very defensively. Good luck on your endeavors! |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Waterloo was a great event, Jim and Joyce Donaldson did a well outstanding job, as well as Tom Demerly as the emcee. His bike shop in Dearborn is a great place for multi-sport help and advice. I am planning on the Fall Colors in Clarkston, MI 9/18 and the Great Pumpkin at Stony Creek 10/9. How about you? How long have you been at this crazy/fun stuff? |

![]() | ![]() This is actually my second season as a duathlete. I have the Lansing Legislator "1/2 Iron" du coming up on Sunday, and my first tri, Coldwater Mini Sprint on 8/27. I was considering the Autum Colors also, and then at the Run Clark Lake 12k on Saturday I got a flyer on my windshield that the Jackson Y is holding their first annual duathlon also in late September. That's a lot closer for me then Shelby Twp. so I'll probably do that one instead. This season I did the Ann Arbor Du, so I know what you mean about the race coordinators. They are fantastic! I also did the Maumee Bay duathlon in June, and Clark Lake du in July. Both Maumee Bay and Clark Lake were the second time around for me, and I enjoyed both of them. Last year I did the sprint distance at Maumee Bay and this year I did the oly distance. I think I enjoyed the Oly distance more |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() nstanziola - 2005-08-10 3:03 PM Could you fill me in on what a Masters swim program is and where I might get some info about them? Thanks, And stay healthy! Nick, Masters swimming is ran through USMS. It is an organized swimming programs for adults. The benefit to me is that I get really bored swimming laps on my own. I swam with a Masters group this summer and the guy coaching us is a collegiate coach. He was great at helping us improve our technique and endurance and the variety in the workouts was fabulous! The group ranged from a couple of ladies who never swam regularly before to a few people who were on college teams. I hear that some of the teams are a little pickier about letting people join who are beginners but I am sure you can call or e-mail around some of the local teams and find one that you would fit in. Here's the link to Michigan Masters: http://www.michiganmasters.com/ Just click on Teams/Clubs to pull up a list to find the teams in your area. If you decide not to join a team, the next best thing would be to find a website or a book with a list of different workouts to do and information on improving your stroke. If you just go out and do 1000 meters every time you swim you may give up out of boredom and you may not improve as much. Sorry if this is too much information. I am a huge advocate of swimming so this is the one area I feel a bit qualified to talk about. As for biking and running...I'm on the other side of the fence - always looking for help and tips! Good Luck! And feel free to PM me if you have any questions! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wowser...welcome to you and CCR...SE Michigan has BT'ers scattered far and wide. A smattering include Trixie, GLF33, Fromer, Smokeeater1833, mitrigirl, me (rkreuser), kcavagnolo, nleidel, rennick, grillmaster, czarjenny, and a few others. I would suggest running a search on 'Michigan' in the newbie forum and you can see who all posted, welcoming the new Michiganders... Best of luck with the training, enjoy BT as a resource and community, and hope your training goes well. PS. CCR - Trixie is running the Legislator Du on Sunday. I'll let her know that you'll be there, maybe you could catch up with your first in-person BT'er!! |

Member![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kim, Thank you for the great info. Hopefully by Jan. I might be able to try swimming with a club. My lessons start in Sept. at Fraser High School. I am thinking a couple of 6 week sessions should get me to a decent base point to build from. I appreciate your insight. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Welcome to the site, plenty of great info here. People from MI are the best. And I agree Tom Demerly's bike shop and staff are the best. They always have a second to answer a question and the service is top notch. Good bros, I will be doing all my future business with them. To bad there are not enough businesses with this work ethic. |
