Subject: ERRR... Sick co-worker...
So, the woman that sits across the isle from me is sick. She was out Mon and Tues but came back yesterday, coughing, sneezing, ... I "jokingly" thanked her for coming in and spreading her germs but she said she didn't want to waste another PTO day. So, business as usual yesterday...

Then, she shows up again today, saying she feels even worse. I told her I was sorry to hear that and maybe it would have been worth thanking the extra PTO day--she might have felt better having 3 days of rest.

But, the really bad part is that she keeps coming over into my cube to talk to me. I have told her that if she gets me sick I'm going to kill her but she just laughed. The problem is that I'm serious! Like most of you, I have registered for several more races this year and, like all of you, I have a lot of training to do.

It's not that she's coming over to talk business either, as we aren’t on the same projects. She's just coming over to B.S. because we are friendly. But, if she comes over here again... !!!

Thanks for listening... At least someone did!

HOW To Avoid The Germs of your co-worker
Eat right! Make sure you get your daily dose of fruits and veggies.
Take your vitamins and bump up your vitamin C.
Get plenty of exercise(ie training for your Tri's) because exercise helps build your immune system.
Walk for at least an hour a day, go for a swim, take the stairs
instead of the elevator, etc.
Wash your hands often. If you can't wash them, keep a
bottle of antibacterial stuff around.
Get lots of fresh air. Open windows whenever possible.
Get plenty of rest.
Try to eliminate as much stress from your life as you can. ) Whimsical

OR

Take the doctor's office approach.
Think about it...
When you go for a shot, what do they do first?
Clean your arm with alcohol.
Why?
Because alcohol kills germs.
So......
I walk to the liquor store (Exercise). After your Tri workouts
I put lime in my Corona (Fruit).
Celery in my Bloody Mary (Veggie).
Drink outdoor at the patio bar (Fresh Air).
Get drunk, tell jokes, laugh (Relieve Stress).
Then pass out (Rest). Right after a Chipolte fix (just had to tthrow it in for the freaks)
The way I see it....
If you keep your alcohol levels up, flu germs can't get you!!!!
Cheers! Remember, It's always
five o'clock somewhere!
As my grandma always said, "A shot in a glass is better than one in the ass!!

I keep a can of Lysol handy, just for those people.  Whatever they've touched, gets soaked with Lysol.  I don't even wait for them to leave.  It's done a great job of keeping the sick-o's away...

I have had no problem telling sick coworkers to not come in my office. I have actually made them drop whatever they needed to give me outside my door and I will pick it up with tongs or something. If they are coming to see me to talk about something, they now know to call.

This is not rude. It keeps you from having to miss work (read: training) due to sickness from someone else. I also keep antibacterial hand cleaner/lotion on my desk at all times.

People, if you are sick STAY HOME. This really gets to me.  The whole reason we have PTO is so we don't have to work when we are sick.  Why is it that we will keep our kids home at the slightest sign of a cough, but when we (adults) are sicker than anything we still go to work???

(Here's where I admit that I have to call my mom so she can tell me to stay home.)

This is also my friendly reminder that your computer keyboard has more germs than the office bathroom.  To keep from getting sick, wash your hands after you potty and before you eat. Drink lots of fluids and rest. Avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes.

Can of lysol or lysol wipes are handy too.

Stay well,

Sarah

Talk to your manager and ask him/her to inform her that coming in to work when she is sick is counter productive.  Your organization will be worse off if she comes in and spreads her cold to the rest of the office.  If your manager refuses to do anything about it, call in sick for a few day!  I am not kidding!

"Dear Dogbert,

My colleagues insist on coming to work even when they are sick with a contagious illness. What should I do"?

Answer:

"Be kind to your sick colleauges. Chances are you will be sick yourself someday. Probably in the very near future."

There's this stuff called Airborne that you can get at Walgreens, CVS, etc.  They are fizzy tabs that you put in water and drink, and they actually don't taste too bad.  Basically it's a bunch of herbs and vitamins and stuff.  I tried it last year during cold season when I felt the creeping crud coming on (achy, coughing, sniffling).  I drank it a few times a day until I felt better, and never got full-blown sick.  But you can also drink it if you are going to be exposed to sick people to help prevent yourself from getting sick.  http://www.airbornehealth.com/main.html

This from WebMD:

Are you contagious before you show symptoms? If a co-worker is sniffing over the phone you share, is he or she contagious then?

The viruses that cause colds and the flu are spread by microscopic droplets from an infected person's respiratory system. It may be possible to catch the virus before symptoms show, via close contact such as kissing or sharing eating utensils. However, in general people need to have some symptoms, such as a runny nose or cough, in order to be contagious. When your co-worker shows symptoms, he or she may indeed be spreading contagious droplets to your shared phone, to the doorknob of your office, or to the buttons on the fax machine. Your best defense is to wash your hands frequently.

I was looking for something to confirm that the advice I was going to give you would be half way valid.  When it is possible I avoid touching things that the "masses" have touched - shopping carts, public restroom doors, the doors into and out of the office suite. I have not flushed a toilet with anything but my foot in probably 20 years -  Obvliously without being kind of a freak, you have to touch stuff, so that is why I am a serious hand washer, and I keep my hands away from my face.  I'm so used to doing it now, it's like second nature and no one even notices.  Even if they did, I would not care, because I have not had so much as a sniffle in 5 years, and I'm exposed to at least one sick co-worker every month of my life.   Personally, if it was me, I'd stop with the joking hints and say "please stay away from me while you are sick. Thanks."
