Subject: Garmin 500 not picking up ANT+
I've been using my Garmin 500 with my wireless powertap and GSC-10 speed/cadence sensor since May 2010.  Use it on every ride with no problem till yesterday.

About 45 minutes into the ride, suddenly both cadence and power stopped being read/recorded on my 500.  Speed, distance, time, elevation, etc kept recording as the GPS was not interrupted.  When I downloaded the file, I could see that the cadence and power stopped recording at the exact same time.  And it wasn't during a stop or auto-pause situation...we were going 20 mph at the time and I was not coasting.

Ok...so here's what I've tried so far.

From the settings, it shows that no ANT+ power meter or speed/cadence is detected.

Here's what I've tried so far.
Power on and off...no luck
Rescan for both devices while within range, no other devices near, and while crank is turning...no luck
Complete reset of my 500 and downloaded and installed the newest garmin 500 update as per Garmin's instructions.  Then rescanned for devices...still no luck.

I reported my last test to Garmin via email and am awaiting a response.  My question is just if anyone experience something like this.  The computer works fine, just with the exception of reading anything ANT+.  I don't have my HR strap anymore, so I couldn't test that.  I suppose it could be the battery in the devices...but what are the chances they both (speed/cadence and powertap) die at the same time.  I tried pushing that little white button on the speed/cadence sensor, and it does light up...so battery looks fine on that device.

I'd check the battery in the head unit since it isn't getting either of the signals from the transmitters.  The GPS signal could be at a completely different power level.  (Hundreds of miles vs dozens of inches ya know...)

Could it be  the battery of the cadence sensor has been dead for a while, cadence was being read from the PT and the PT battery just died ?

When was the last time you changed the battery in the PT ?

Interesting thought.  But when I hit the button on the cadence sensor, it does light up.

I think what I'm going to try is see if an LBS has a 500, joule, or 310xt I can test with to see if it can pick up the devices on my bike just to make sure it's the 500 that's failing.

I called Garmin, and while they are willing to repair it, they are asking that I send the unit in first before they ship a replacement.  They said they do offer immediate replacement...where they ship immediately, charge my credit card, then credit me back when I ship them my device, but that is not offered for my product.  Not sure why.

So this means I'll be completely without a computer for roughly 1-2 weeks.  Sucks because I was planning on doing a time trial on March 6th.

I recently attended a Garmin product training where the Garmin rep, Karsten Hagen (an excellent rep) mentioned that most (70+%) of Garmin warranty returns were simply in need of either a "soft" or "hard" reset.

You may lose some data in the process, but it has frequently restored the unit to full operation.

Check the Garmin website as I believe there are some resources on there for how to administer and trouble shoot this circumstance.

Best of Luck Sir.

I've had the same issues with my 305.

Both the HRM and the Cadence Sensor stopped working...how do you change out the battery in device itself? I've changed out the battery in the HRM, but Garmin still did not pick it up...

the 500 is rechargable with a digital battery life reading.  I always keep it at 100%.

I'm going to try the hard reset again when I get home.  Like you mentioned...I can't imagine that the ANT+ antenna (or whatever it uses to pick up ANT+) simply broke while everything else about the unit still works fine.

I'm just a bit shocked that they are requiring me to ship the unit back before they are willing to ship me a replacement.  I mean...that kind of blows that you pay $200-250 for a computer, and you can't get a little better service on it.  Especially when they do offer immediate replacement on other products...just not mine for some reason.  Charge my credit card and don't reimburse me if I don't send my device to them...I don't see why they need to be so cautious or where the risk is on their side.

I'm thinking about calling them back.
