Subject: An extremely serious question regarding Japan ...

Hi, COJ.  I'm a cyber-friend to a guy who is residing in Japan (he had to move back about 3 to 4 years or so ago to take care of his father's business).  I've only communicated with him via e-mail for a few years, but not on a consistent basis.  However, he sent me an e-mail that had a very serious question that sparked my interest, and I'm looking for feedback that I can provide to him.

The following is the e-mail he sent recently (please do not critique his syntax/grammar/spelling):

**************************************************
Here in Japan, at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant,
radioactivity's been leaking from the reactors (!) sometime now;
What'smore, accumulated hydrogen caused fires as you probably saw.

Because the plant, the power company or the companies who built the plant
did not have cooling pumps, they finally bought one American pump via Australia.
Fukushima nuclear power plant has a bit more than 10 times the "fuel"
than the Chernobyl nuclear power plant had.  If another quake hits the Fukushima area, this country and many other places, including anything with or without life, shall be destroyed.
And our Prime Minister's not been doing anything but "hide himself".

What would you guys do, if you have a case like this in your coutry?
**************************************************

Wow!  I do not know what to think since I don't know anything about the politics and such over there.

Any thoughts, COJ??

I think there would be mass evacuations until the situation is 100% stabilized. But Canada is huge and many people have relatives they can stay with that are thousands of km away so situation is different.

I would start by actually understanding what's going on, what the actual risks are at the plant, how it's different from Chernobyl, and not be freaked out by sensationalist rumors.

Exactly as core dump said, sensationalism at its best.

#1) the fuel is not going to explode.  It's impossible.  That's right...impossible.  It's not a bomb.

Is this a bad situation?  Yes.  Is it grave?  No.  They seem, from official and news sources, to be doing everything the can and appropriately.  This is not Chernobyl.

The power plant withstood the quake without a problem.  It was the Tsunami that took out the cooling pumps (all 12 of them) that was the problem.  My feedback to your friend would be, keep your distance from the plant and go on about your business.  Be concerned, yes.  But don't think this is going to destroy life as we know it, because it's not.

This is probably like a lot of things in life, the more knowledge and correct information you have on this the less fear or panic one will have as CoreDump implied.

My initial reaction would be to leave the area with the thought that it's better to be safe than sorry, but I'm one who doesn't understand all that much about how and why nuclear radiation will affect a person and what the dangers truly are.

The other area of concern imo is how much you can trust what the govt. or media is saying.

Do you know or can you find out what specifically the Prime Minister is or is not doing that causes him to feel that he is hiding?

I wish your friend the best along with all of the other people who are affected by this catastrophe.

I think what the interesting question is what the Government would do? Would that wait it out, see how things are going, trust a corporation to fix the problem, or would they be incredibly cautious.

The problem with this situation and many like it, we don't know the real facts.  The media makes things bigger than they are most of the time just to make a story out of it.  Is the problem really that big or do they really have handle on it?  The other issue with this story is Japan people are some of the most secretive and private people you'll ever meet, so if there sharing some news they're not sharing all the news.

What would we as Americans do?  Well, with our current government we would form a hearing to discuss the situation, then hold  another hearing to discuss that hearing and then have the CEO's drive in to discuss the previous hearings...in short we would get nothing more accomplished.
