Pre-race routine:

Breakfast of Cheerios OJ Bagel and a glass of milk. Its barely a 40 minute drive to Mora. Much nicer than having to drive over an hour to most races.
Event warmup:

Met up with my brother in law who was wanting to do a sub 1:45 to qualify for the first wave for the twin cities marathon. Some easy stretches and a clif bar 30 mins before the start.

  • 1h 52m 32s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Went through the mill on this run. Was quite pleasant at the start with temps in the mid to high 50's I guess. The first couple of miles were very comfortable with all the shelter from the trees lining the city streets. The we got out into the country and the sun beat down you can see from my splits how that affected my pace. I was wilting big time Then between miles 8 and 9 the clouds rolled in and really cooled things down then from mile 10 to the finish it was raining. Lovely, I've never been so happy to see rain! That helped to bring my pace back up and I passed many of the people that had passed me while I was wilting. I was a little confused by the location of the finish line as a consequence I slowed up thinking I had finished when I still had 50 more yards to go.
What would you do differently?:

As ususal I went out too fast. I should have kept a better eye out for the finish line too. Apart from that not much really. Perhaps I could have drunk more during the really hot spells of the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Found my wife, her sister and Brother in law, he ran in 1:42 and qualifies for the first wave of twin cities next year. Picked up food at the food stand. Actually did some stretching and swapped race stories. I spent a mile or so running behind "way too much cologne wearer" I had to pass him I was gagging it was so strong.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I set myself a goal to run sub 2 hours. That I did comfortably. Though I may not have been so comfortable if the sun had stayed out. I did go off too fast. But in the end I don't know what difference it really made.

Event comments:

This was the 25th anniversary run so the T shirst are very nicely embroidered on the front rather than screen printed. People were out in the middle of nowhere cheering you on. That was great. I enjoyed the race alot.

Hey great race... I tend to go out too fast too (as I did this weekend in a 1/2 marathon in Basalt, CO...
By your split times however, I'd say you stayed tough throughout and maybe your fast early miles helped your overall time... Your last miles were similar to your middle miles - not much of a fade... My point is (not in full marathons though) that in most races you can improve times early while you still have leg speed - but you must have leg strength so that you do not fade horibly at the end... I'd say you have great leg strength. A little more speedwork and you will break 1:45 soon!
