Bay State Triathlon Team
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 26m 58s
Overall Rank = 474/494
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 55/55
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:15: Cereal with Milk, 1 Cup of Coffee, Protonix, Allegra, multivitamin, glass of water
Event warmup:

Gatorade, Protein Bar, stretching. Tire blew when I checked the air pressure. Changed it. Racked bike, set up transition perfect. Ready to rock and roll!
Swim
  • 36m 35s
  • 1408 yards
  • 02m 36s / 100 yards
Comments:

Inhaled water right off the bat. Calmed down and got into a rythm. I tend to pull to the left so I had to keep correcting my direction. My left calf started cramping in 2nd half, went away, but started coming back in last quarter. Thought I had it under control until I tried to step out of the water and my leg came close to a full cramp. Managed to fight it off and climbed up the embankment to T1
What would you do differently?:

2 Things: Master Swim Class & figure out what I'm doing wrong with my electrolytes. I know I don't swim fast, but I can easily swim this distance.
Transition 1
  • 04m 22s
Comments:

I did some stretching in T1 that slowed me down. Other than that T1 was fine.
What would you do differently?:

Get my electrolytes correct so I don't have to spend time stretching.
Bike
  • 1h 24m 40s
  • 24.9 miles
  • 17.65 mile/hr
Comments:

Couldn't put any serious effort into the bike without cramping. Started with my calf, then moved to opposite hamstring. Drank a full gatorade and most of a water by end. Started feeling strong at end. But... both legs went into full seizure as I stepped off bike. Had to lean against bike for several minutes before I loosened up enough to hobble across the mat for my bike split.
What would you do differently?:

Damn cramping. That's the key to any improvement. Would also bring my bike pump, just in case of a flat. I was nervous the whole ride I would get a flat and not be able to fix it.
Transition 2
  • 04m 49s
Comments:

In T1 I questioned finishing. My legs were severely seizing when I put any stress on them. After awhile, they loosened up. I stretched. I was going to finish.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure what I could have done at that point.
Run
  • 1h 16m 34s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 12m 21s  min/mile
Comments:

I got about 1/4 mile before my legs fully cramped again. I leaned against a tree and stretched. Then, I walked. Started feeling better and tried running again. I got about another 1/4 mile before cramping up again. It was basically a 6.2 mile walk.
What would you do differently?:

?
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. Drank gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I consulted a sports nutritionist. After going over things in detail he believes I started the race with a sodium deficit that what I took in could not have overcome. This deficit was cumulative from working out in hot weather over the days and weeks before the race. He also suggested I check for side effects from Protonix and Allegra. They might aggravate things.

Event comments:

This was a horrible race for me. I worked too hard all year for this kind of performance. But I'll learn from it and if they have a prize for most improved next year, I have a good shot. The saving grace of this race for me was the BTers there. They are a great crowd, cheering each other on, supporting each other. They made the race worthwhile for me.

Despite the cramping and stuff it was still fun having you there and seeing you finish. Fighting through the rough spots and still coming across the line shows you have lots of determination!

Make sure you show up at some more races so we can hang out again...it was a good time!!

Not exactly sure how my race report ended up in the forums. Not the report I wanted to shout out to the world.

What a great race though! Will be back next year. Max vs. May challenge was fun. Max, I could learn a lot from you! Great job May. Congrats to Isis and Amine! (How'd the pictures come out?) Rob's probably tired of me thanking him for his spare tube that I didn't need to use. Joe, I'm looking forward to reading your articles. C2fd, I'm probably the guy you bumped into as i zigzagged my way in the swim. How's the Softride rear derailer running now? Max you figured that out pretty quickly. Could you post a picture of the sign with everyone's signatures on it?

This was my first Oly and 2nd tri, are they all this much fun?

Who's doing Duxbury? Unfortunately Isis told me it's closed out. Is anyone else in?

You know the adage is that racing is 99 % mental...you had a physical issue that would have stopped many in their tracks- you chose to perservere....and finished a VERY uncomfortable (understatement of the year) race. In my eyes you finished way ahead of the 43 who didn't face the problem, whatever your finish time was.
WE all need to heed the lesson you learned as well- that we can train hard but we have to train & race smart or risk not only a diappointing race- but potentially a serious health issue.
I'm sorry that this race wasn't what you hoped & planned for- but I'm looking forward to your NEXT race report- and maybe you'll be inspired to write about the experience and how to avoid it so someone else doesn't suffer a similar fate........?
Truly glad to meet you-and thanks for being there to cheer the rest of us.

Hey Joe!! Man, you worked and pushed thru so much that would have shut down others. Many of the high strung folks wold have quit at the flat. You finished and had a great time hanging out!

Glad to have met you!! Nice hanging out w/ you before and after the race. LOL...I think we swam side by side there for a while.

Have fun and kick some butt at Duxbury!!

Joe - congrats on your race regardless of the problems you faced (cramping). You managed to put a great race out there.

I keep posting this in different threads and forums: It is VERY important to have a proper nutrition/hydration for workouts, before, during and after a race. I feel your disappointments as we work so hard for so long to have a problem like "fueling" diminish the returns on our race. Unfortunately we don’t think of nutrition as a vital part of training until we go through the "bonking" process and learn our lesson the hard way. Mine was at the Boston Marathon. I trained like I’d never done before, I was ready for a 3:20hrs marathon or better and killed my race at mile 7 or 8 when I started failing to fuel proper... The best investment I’d done this season was to buy the Food for Fitness book by Chris Carmichael. It is very easy to read a gives you great detail info on how to fuel your workouts, races and recovery process...

GOOD JOB!

Jorge

Hey Joe! Been looking for your RR! Yeah I kinda like to keep my RR's as drafts too - archived in cyberspace.....I did what you did last year by accident....but I warn you, we can STILL dig 'em up if you keep them as drafts (private)!

I think I know what your nutrition issues was...you didn't eat a Box Of Donuts before the race! I have to say that I admire you finishing the run portion, no matter what it took!

Hopefully you'll be able to figure out your electrolyte issue soon, and I wish your race had come out as you would have wanted. As always, a good learning experience, but as important, an opportunity to meet up with new friends!

Hopefully you are able to squeeze in one more Olympic before the season is over! Looking forward to seeing you smash that time at Cranberry 2006!

It was great to meet you and glad you finished!!

You perserved when you had very difficult physical issues....it shows what you are made of.

Next year watch out...most improved ....and a better race.

Keep up the hard work and enjoy your tris. There is a tri in early Oct. in Danbury CT. It is a shorter distance...1.5/35/10K race...if you want to give another a try this season. It is a small race and it should be much cooler.
