I finished my first HIM this season - Muskoka - and am toying with trying another 70.3 in 2012.

My ideal race would have rolling hills but hilly is okay too.  The thing is - I don't want loops.  I was thinking Peterborough until I learned you have to swim 2 loops - actually getting out of the water and wading back in.  And the run has you doing 3 loops past the finish line.  I need the stimulation of a nice setting and loops bore me.   I was also toying with Welland but it's flat and fast - I'm not that fast so... unsure as to whether it is the right fit.

Does anyone have any suggestions?  A mid summer race would be ideal.

Steelhead?  The swim course is a straight into the beach with the current.  (It has been cancelled 2x though.)  The bike is an out-and-back lollypop.  The run course IS two loops - but honestly - at that point I like some predictability.... The course there is beautiful.  Bike course is rolling, beach is GORGEOUS, run course is partial trails.  I really liked it. And it's the August long weekend.

I'm doing Cedar point next year.  One loop swim, one loop bike, one loop run.  It's going to be flat though.

Musselman in the Finger Lakes? Beautiful scenery, lovely one loop swim. rolling hills on the bike, couple of steep hills on the run - July 17th weekend - can be hellishly hot though.

3 hours from West of Toronto - great local support.

As for HIM/IM races that don't have loops... I think you're going to be looking long and hard. The local areas don't want to have such a huge area to patrol, keep free of traffic. You will most likely find all races greater then HIM with multiple loop courses. (Muskoka is an anomaly... although you do come back on 10 km of road that you went out on)

I think you are right.  The other catch - I was spoiled with Muskoka being at Deerhurst resort.  The transition was LITERALLY in the parking lot of the resort.  It was great for the family to have brunch, play some tennis, go for a swim etc while I was racing.  Most of the races I see are at a local park and it's hard to find a comparable resort-like place nearby - which means I have to ride to the race start on my bike with gear OR  steal the car leaving them trapped in a hotel.  And a hotel does not equal a resort.  Given all the time hubby watches child while I'm out training, I think they both deserve a weekend away at a RESORT!  So ya... might not happen after all.  Thanks for the suggestions everyone.  Musselman does look pretty!

I took a look at the course and from what they posted, the bike portion is mostly on a 'flat' course. Thre is only one big hill I believe. But again, I only took a quick look at it as I am considering doing it so I might be wrong.

Cheers.

I'm more concerned about the hills on the run course than at the ones on the bike course.....

The peterborough run doesn't really have loops - you go by the finish line a couple times, but you never run on the same trail in the same direction twice.  You go out-and-back through beavermeade park (~5km), then out-and-back through a bunch of country roads (~16km).

The swim has a loop, but swimming is pretty boring anyway

MSC Welland 1/2Iron is my favorite.  1 loop swim, 1 loop bike, 1.5 loop run. Flat and fast course. Well organized. Mid-summer time-frame.  It is a fast course but what difference does that make? On a fast course everyone is faster and on a slow course everyone is slower.

sold.

I'm just really impressed with the recharge with milk series. (i feel like they really listen to the post-race feed back and WORK at improving their events!)

I'm aiming for Welland this year & Muskoka in 2013...

Or.. maybe this is always the case (& I'm not the most up-to-date in my knowledge of event news/spectulation).... but: is the Muskoka 70.3 event in danger??

Thought I had heard that the Deerhurst partnership was in danger.

Maybe/hopefully I'm WAY off-base with this??

I've heard that there was concerns, especially because Vegas 70.3 is the same day, but they have already posted about registration for 2012, so nothing is changing yet.

If you are talking about the resort you may be confusing it with the Rosseau which is in receivership.  I haven't heard the same for Deerhurst...

3 hours from West of Toronto - great local support.

Definitely a top choice for me!  Probably the best run event I have EVER done and so beautiful. Description is accurate but don't let that fool you.   This can be a TOUGH course depending on the winds, and the heat really adds to things.   I have never seen so many DNF's as last year and so many people walking the run.   I was glad that I had registered for the aqua/bike.

I love the one loop swim that has you going in multiple directions, so it also can offer a good challenge on a windy day.

Can't wait to go back and do the full HIM.

good! i'm relieved!!

i thought i had heard that deerhurst may not host the event down the road (which would be brutal!)

looking forward (already!) to the point in time when i AM ready to take on that course!!

seems like a "must-do" to me....

Hello.

HIM Syracuse is hilly although not what Muskoka is,is based on single loops and has a great fan base. Lots ofsupport out to greet the cyclist and runners.

I really enjoyed it.

My favourites are Mooseman and Timberman which are an easy drive from where I am in Ottawa and are awesome courses. But you run into loops in both races. Not so bad given the fans and the support.

Want to put a few miles on the car, Eagleman is a great race. No loops, lots of heat, great fans, and a dead pan gain of 1m of elevation. It has lots of pros a long history and eagles circling above waiting for you to drop.

The eagles got me through my last race there in 2011.  I bonked at 68 k but was motivated by the circling raptors.
