Subject: One month enough time????

Ok, on my schedule for next year, I have been planning for the Harvest Moon HIM which this year was Sept 18th.  But now I'm inspired to attempt the Chicago Mary which was Oct 9 this year.

Is three weeks enough recovery from a half to attempt both?

I'd say no, and not so much because of the recovery time for the marathon but the difficulty you'll have getting in your long runs in time to recover for the HIM and still be fit for the marathon. Most plans call for peak running mileage, including a long run of at least 20 miles, three weeks out from the marathon date. How are you going to manage a 20-miler the same weekend as your HIM? Could you do one the week before and be recovered for the HIM? Probably not? That leaves you the option of a long run 5 weeks or 2 weeks before your marathon, neither of which is desirable.

If you're still convinced you cah swing it, get training plans for both and see if you can meld the two, without scrimping on the running. You'd be a lot better off focusing on one or the other.

There are plenty of HIMs and plenty marathons out there. No reason to pick two so close together.

I think it depends on your background but I would say no.  Most beginner marathon training programs include two twenty mile runs before tapering.  And those runs aren't usually back to back on the weekend.  I don't think you would have enough time to properly train.  Marathons are weird because you never know how your body will react physically and mentally after 20 miles. You would have a much better marathon experience if you waited to recover from your 1/2 IM and took a few months training for a marathon.  Good luck with whatever you deicde to do!

I say your fitness and determination will decide it. I recovered from my first HIM in less than 48 hours. Felt 100% two days after the race. Just work out your plan.

It is possible but will require some significant adjustments. Here is what I would do:

Before the HIM I would really focus on the run (in the couple of months before the HIM), with some runs as long as 2 hrs. Bike focus should come before this run focus. Build in a 1-2 week taper before the HIM (personally, I would do a 1 week taper and race the HIM conservatively).

Race the HIM and then:

Take 1 week off. For the two weeks before the marathon, drop the cycling and swimming and just run (3-4 times per week), using a typical marathon tapering program. Get some extra sleep and carb up sufficiently before the marathon. Don't expect to PR the marathon, but finishing should not be a problem. You should be able to handle it OK.
