I'm going for a quick vacation in Amsterdam in November. Has anybody been there recently and can you suggest any restaurants that are reasonably priced for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Any other suggestions?

I have been before, just never for more than a day trip.

Imagine how expensive the trip could become: A visitor (not me, of course) doesn't know any inexpensive restaurants and visits a "coffee shop". A couple of hours later, the munchies kick in (I hear this can happen). Uncontrolled eating takes place in a pricey restaurant. The visitor ends up spending more on food than on his hotel room.

This happens over an over again, with the visitor always having forgotten what happened the previous day....

I have been there, but not recently, and I don't remember enough to give you specific recommendations. I do remember the food as being pricey and not overly inspired. Lots of small bar/restaurants where people smoke their joints while you eat.

Been over 20 years, I remember sitting in one of the city centers by a church and an outside bar patio, drinking real Heiniken and shots of Genever Gin...that's all i remember.

And for some reason, people knew I was an American.  That Look.

Probably because you weren't smoking a cigarette. It's the one thing I'll never get about the Dutch, they still smoke like chimneys.

Having been to Holland visiting relatives many times, I can say that the surest way to be identified as a foreigner is to smoke a joint in a place that is not appropriate. I have seen two English girls spark a joint on a train platform in the afternoon, some moron light one up in the airport, past security...

Yes, the Dutch are tolerant, but there are limits to good behaviour. A man in The Hague asked me one time where I'd visited in Holland, I said that I'd been to Amsterdam, he says "oh, that's not Holland!".

living only 2 hours away from a-dam... the best thing to do is just find hole in the wall joints and try whatever is on the menu... the food is just amazing... you could of course hit the american spots like the Hard Rock cafe but you will pay... my buddy caught the train upthere this past weekend and said that the "Heineken Experience" is worth the 10euros and you get a glass packaged in a tin box... are you planning on "smoking"?

wait... since everyone here loves chipotle... you could find a kebab shop and grab a kip durem with sambal sauce... it is basically a chicken burrito with letteuce, onions, red cabbage, some have pickles (wierd at first but really good), some have cuccumbers, some have sugar beets... but the kebab shops are what i would hit up... oh yeah... sambal is kind of like a red chili paste... that stuff is good as hell.... if you go to a frittuur... everything is deep fried but damned good... i usually have a braadwurst with onions, peppers, and sauerkraut... kipcorns are pretty good, they are like a chicken stick covered with cornflake type breading that is deep fried... but really... any of the food is pretty good... soft drinks are expensive, they are like 1.50euro per can... beer is pretty cheap... anyway, have fun up there... i always do

I plan on eating some healthy Dutch food like kroketten, gember koek, stroopwaffels, poffertjes and lumpia. I know Indonesian food, so I'm well acquainted with sambal (I'm sweating just thinking about it!).

But one can't live on grease and sugar alone.

Regarding the "smoking", well you know, when in Rome.... Why, have you any suggestions?

I was there a year ago. Ate at a couple of good local restaurants. One had the traditional meat and potatoes, the other was pancakes/crepes. I might have the name of the restaurants. We stayed at a B & B so breakfast was always there.

It was unplaned but we ran the Amsterdam half marathon, had a great time.
