Subject: well, my time here was short and sweet...
dear BT 'community',

It has become apparent that I am not welcome in this forum. I came to this forum from a link from another triathlon website, to chat with fellow triathletes, not to- quote- "pick up chicks". I clearly stated this in my first post in the "Introduce yourself" section.
notice: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp...

I came with no ill intentions whatsoever. I chose a picture for an avatar that I liked, that just so happened to be of me at a party without a shirt on. This apparently led people to make assumptions about me, before getting to know me. So, I changed it. Most, except for tmwelshy, chose to call me 'newbie'. I went along with it even though it was annoying. No one bothered to call me by my name or even my log-in name, again except for tmwelshy, even though i addressed others by their real or screen name. I was repeatedly asked about my triathlon-ing abilitities, gear and race experience as if this was some kind if requirement to to be let in the door. When a thread started to steer toward threesomes, etc., I knew it was all in good fun, but somehow I ended up being the "perv" out of the whole thread.

Today, a long time bt.com member with 1,000 + posts said to me through a PM that- and I paste and quote- "We are more like a family than "hook up central". It's appropriate to lurk for awhile to see what the forums are like, what people say, and learn what's serious and what's not..."

I never thought of intended this to be 'hookup central', and I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that new members are required to lurk for several months to learn what is 'appropriate.' I have since learned that only silliness that is allowed is about 'chipotle' and 'burritos'. I just though that this could be a fun place to be hang out now that the racing season is over.

Apparently I was wrong. Apparently, the certain members of the 'crew' who frequent the 'Cup Of Joe' house require a password to be let in with their 'family'.

...allow the Mark bashing to continue.

Do you always let people run you off so easily? Cowboy up, dude.

2 choices:

live, learn, accept advice graciously, start fresh

or

pout, stomp foot, be sarcastic, assume that a few speak for all, and leave.

It's your loss or gain, and ours too.

Hey, don't worry about it. Remember high school? This isn't so different. There are cliques, and cliques are by their nature exclusionary.

You have to accept that there are some things that are posted that are not for you, or me.. or most posters for that matter. They involve people who have established relationships. I learned the same lesson soon after arriving.

Cup of Joe is a time waster anyway, I use it when I have downtime at work. There is little redeeming value to it. But the site is very useful and you can get great encouragement, tips and ideas.

Just relax, people didn't mean to come across as mean, I'm almost sure of it.

I wouldn't get too discouraged by what some people say in this forum. Are you that thinskinned that you would think about leaving? It may take a few months to figure out the "pulse" of this forum.  There is a ton of useful info, advice, and input posted by the members here.  There are no snobs, know it alls, or sarcastic j-offs on this forum like other websites out there.  Just keep it clean, this site is for helpful advice.  I figure you are an adult, and can figure out for yourself what you can and cannot post on this site.

Mark,

Relax. Post counts mean nothing.  NOTHING.  You just happened to land yourself in a very "overwhelming" clique that led you down a certain path.  You didn't do anything I wouldn't have.  Whoever pm'd you certainly doesn't speak for me...

Leave if you want, but...are you that easily offended?  As far as I know this is an open forum, and the training logs/tools are awesome.

edit- ok, I wouldn't have posted that "sneak a peak" thing, but to each his own.

Truer words have never been spoken. Did I mention that as a general rule I am full of shit*? Half the time I don't even know what I'm saying.

Oh, that reminds me, it's Friday, I've gotta put beer in the fridge.

*Am I allowed to say shit? I think the urination thread established that potty humour is permitted.

Thanks for the advice guys- both public and PM. It's not that I'm that thin skinned, It's just that I have enough drama in my life without getting more here. I was thinking if that's what this is about, then f*&ck it, I'm out.

I didn't realize there was a 'chipotle' gang. I thought the whole Joe crowd was like this. I thought I had left the cliques in highschool. BTW- Renee, what the wrong with the square root of 81? a little too 9th grade algebra for ya?

Sweetpea, I took algebra in 7th grade; the slower kids took algebra in 9th. I'm mortified that anyone would suggest such a thing about me!

About all I can say is that if you come in hot and heavy, you open yourself up a bit. No one's "required" to lurk before they post, all I'm saying is there should be a certain level of decorum (I know, I know...pot, kettle). It's just a good idea to get to know people beore you come in guns blazing.

That other thread seriously was not done with malice, it was just letting you people know where we're coming from. Possum's advice is great. Take a deep breath and start over. Don't run away so easily.

Need some tri advice?

No reason for you to leave, dude. I've been on this site for a long time (almost 2 years) and there are fads that come and go - all this junk used to be on the main triathlon page, and those of us that posted anything non tri related were a constant source of frustration for focused athletes... Chipotle and burritoes used to be peanut butter, athenas and camisoles - there is no "chipotle gang," just the folks who are associated with those threads.

I mention my longevity here to point out that there have been folks here (and still are) that just don't get me and don't really care for my brand of humor, or for me in general, for that matter. Clearly they're morons, but that's besides the point... where was I...? Oh yes. When I rule the world, I will smite all those who... Sorry, wrong window.... My point is, so you brushed someone the wrong way. It happens. Clearly that person (or persons) rubbed you the wrong way too (and here I thought rubbing was always good). So be it. It is not a reason to leave, it is simply a reason not to post with that person (or persons) and agree to leave eachother alone. If you go, I understand, but you certainly don't need to. This is not a site where any other than the most obtuse and absurd are run off, and I don't think you are either.

(and here I thought rubbing was always good).

It can be too hard and rough. Nothing worse than being left raw and chaffed. Kind of my point in all this.

Body glide will help reduce the rubbing, as well as some butt butter, aquaphor, etc.

Seriously dude, don't sweat it. It's all in fun. And when you've only been around a few days, then that's what you are, a newbie. It's not a malicious term, personally I think it's a term of endearment.

Maybe you are part of some really accepting circles, but where I come from the new guy will get hazed from time to time. I was known only as FNG for my first month and a half at one of my tours of duty, and the samething went for the next guy too. It's a vicious cycle.

Think of it this way, if folks didn't like you and want you around, they would just ignore you.

I lurked on several Tri forums before I settled in here.  Each has its own "personality" and I decided over time that I felt most comfortable here.  Sure cliques are going to form, just like any other social group. It's only natural. Don't expect people to fully accept you overnight. The longer you've been here, the more you can get away with in terms of sarcasm, humor, sexual innuendo, etc.  If you're new and people aren't quite sure where you're coming from, then you might will get some negative feedback if you're perceived to be coming on too strong too fast.

To somewhat echo Jim's comments, I don't recall seeing any posts from you actually dealing with triathlons.  How many have you done?  What are you training for? Some participation on the Triathlon Talk forum might help your cause from a credibility standpoint.

I've posted things on occasion that some people took exception to (mostly mis-interpreted attempts at humor), but we were been able to work things out through PMs.  Through it all, I think that a level of mutual respect exists between most of the active members here. That's one of the reasons I hang around.

For what its worth,

Mark

YOU CAN'T LEAVE!!!   What nice abs am I going to stare at??

I lurked on this forum and another certain tri forum before posting.  I jumped in slowwwllly.  It wasn't till after a few chat sessions and meeting some folks in person I was brave enough to post more.   Just ease it in.

Stick around.  I have learned the hard way to be careful before I post anywhere!!  If you leave yourself open to comment or ridicule, however subtle, some folks will jump all over.

STAY!!  pretty please?   Just spend more time in the Tri forum and on your training log and inspiring people.
