Subject: Need help with this one

As I have mentioned in a few past posting, my partner is having our baby in march. We had another scan yesterday to confirm an irregularity in his (yes Its a boy) right leg. They told us the right tibia and fibula were shorter than the left and the foot is Telopis (club foot) They are unsure what has caused it but we know we are bound for a 1 year+ of surgery and casts to correct it. They are monitoring the bone growth over the next couple of weeks to see if it will play catch up or fall behind.

So my request is this:

Have any of you experienced this or know of family or friends who have?

I know this is a lot to ask of an online group, but it is somewhat easier to discuss with one dimensional text and comment than asking directly for help. weird I know but this is really the only way I know how to deal with it. Comfort could come from your words. Oh, my partner I I are talking, so thats not the issue.

Club foot should be fine....not sure about the short tib/fib...if you get more data I may be able to help.

Also try this...go to t search engine and query Wheeless textbook of orthopedics...its an online textbook...you may find some info. 

Also its probably just un luck of the draw that it is present.

Very scarry, I'm sure. You're probably tossing and turning all night thinking about the ordeal that may lie in front of you.

But I promise you this, when your child is born and you're in that delivery room and you see him enter this world your heart will melt. Your son will be born, he will be in the world and you will be there to greet him. What a wonderful day that will be.

Whatever happens will happen. There are no guarantees as a parent, even with physically healthy children there are no gaurantees for the future.

Your road may be harder than some, but it is often the difficult road that is the most rewarding. If it's any consulation, most studies indicate that children don't have any meaningful memories of the first three years of their lives. So any discomfort he will go through during that time he most likely won't remember.

Congrats on your new son. You'll be a wonderful parent. Your son will have a wonderful life.

My roommate's sister just found out that her baby (due in <3 months) has an irregularity in her arm. Of course she's very upset about this, as all parents want the "10 fingers , 10 toes" etc. Roomie was telling me that she had a long talk with her sister about the importance of not blaming her or her husband for the possible complications to come, and about having safeguards in place after the birth in case of post-partum depression and the like.

Incidentally, there is a man who swims at the Y I work at who has one leg significantly shorter than another, and he just wears corrective orthopedic sandles down to the pool and uses the staircase ladder instead of the regular ladder. He's actually quite a good swimmer.
