Subject: I have a delima, what should I do???

In 2006 I am going to do the Music city Mary again. this year I did the half and finished in 2:10. I have never did a full mary yet but have put in a lot of miles and have did 20 a few times.

Should I: do the full mary just because I have never did one or should I do the half again and see how bad I can crush my this years time? I am leaning toward the half because I am so competitive.

I ran 10 on a training run last week and did it in 1:35 so I know I could kill with some good speed work early in the spring. Music city isnt until April.

What you think?

Do what you feel like. You've got to WANT to do a marathon. You'll be miserable if you're doing it "just to do it"

Heck, that's totally up to you. What could we offer? It all depends on your goals and your likes/dislikes.

If you've always wanted to run a marathon, and see completeing one as a badge of honor, then that's the way you should go. If you like the idea of running as fast as you can (and like me, prefer to keep your long runs under two hours) then the half beckons.

Any long distance triathlons after? If so, then do the half and use it as a training run. If not, do the full and see what happens.

Yeah, what they said! Make up your own mind. Sometimes I wonder how you people decide when to go to the bathroom without first posting the question here on BT.

Don't ask me that, I'll vote for you holding it until you have an embarassing accident.

What are your racing goals for 2006? I plan to do a marathon next season as well as a full century but only in that I would like accomplish and learn from each prior to potentially doing an IM in '07.

If you have other goals for your '06 season, then focus the amount of effort you would spend on training for the 26.2 miles on accomplishing those ... e.g. if an adventure race then learning orienteering, if accomplishing a long trail run then running up mountain trails, etc.

Guess the point is that you might want to decide upon your 2006 goals prior to deciding on which race or length you want to do.

Just my uniformed opinion ...

PS: All ... the answer is that you should hold it as loooooooong as possible. How many "sports" can you place that require that kind of determination when you are sitting at your desk?

I usually sit.  You can stand if you want.  You decide.

It doesn't take a poll

"Should I stand or should I sit"

For a guy it's very simple

Gotta pee or gotta...

Finishing a marathon is such an incredible experience....
Plus you can still work on speed and look at your spilt times for half the distance
Or... maybe you can find another half marathon and make it your B race....
So many choices
Good Luck

What if you are in a bike race - you sit and go - so it's not always that simple. :-)

First I have to say wow Mike Ricci making mindless posts and he has a since of humor....lol You need to come out and hang in the COJ sometime and get your posting number up....lol

Second. You know I have no desire to really do a full marathon other than to just say "I did a marathon" which sounds just as dumb as any other reason I guess. So doing a marathon is not really a biggie to me. I have 9 tri's next year none over OLY distance only 3 are important (so the rest are for the shirt and being used for training). I dont really see the point of doing a marathon for milage in April when I could be doing sprints and other speed building skills and then begin to taper for my tri's in late May.  I will already have a good base of mile,  I just need to get faster...

Maybe my thinking is wrong in the training part but it sounds good I guess.

Plus I think the rush of doing a hmary in 1:45 or less would rock way more than a mary in under 5 hours. Plus I guess I can always do a full mary later at the end of the year.

Oh plus I say go when you got to go, it can cause bladder problems. No need to ask just quietly get up and leave the room,

See that's what I'm talking about. How are we supposed to know your priorities, what appeals to your inner self, what drives you? Something of this nature is purely personal. Make up your own mind, you don't need us for that.

BTW, if you're capable of a 1:45 HM, you should be shooting for a 3:45 (or faster!) mary, not five hours.

Well thanks - I do have a sense of humor but with all the posts I answer on the Performance board, it doesn't leave my mind much else to think about.

As for your situation - train like you are traiinng for the marathon, but race the 1/2. You will recover quicker and less chance of injury. If you get injured racing the marathon, then your tri season is done before it even begins. A 1:45 half is equal to about a 3:40 marathon - double + 10 minutes. How fast is your 10k so we can tell you how fast you should REALLY be running the 1/2 marathon?

What is COJ?

Cup of Joe. A complete waste of time.

They really need to let you out of that Performance closet more often, Ricci.

Mike,

I need to do a TT for a 10K to see, my last 10K was in a OLY in Sept and I have a meltdown and walked a lot of it so I dont count it.

I ran last week 10miles at 1 hr 35 min first 5 low Zone2, with next 4 high zone3, then a 11 min cool down for the last mile. So I do not really have any good number to go on.

I will do a TT near my house in the within the next week so I can see where I am and then we can figure time from there.

Should I go all out LT on the TT and feel like I have nothing left or should I focus on doing it in a certain zone? all training get so so technical...lol way different from when I was in college and ran cross country, we just went out and ran hard as we could all the time.

Oh COJ is cup of joe
