Subject: Audiobook suggestions

Ok, I love audiobooks on road trips. I need one, maybe 2 for this weekend.

I just listened to Million Little Pieces and before that was The DaVinci CodeMillion Little Pieces was a little slow and depressing but pretty good. I really liked The DaVinci Code. I generally like mystery/suspense books but like good non-fiction too. Authors like Robin Cook, or Grisham, etc. Oh yea, listened to Steve Martin, Pure Drivel from run4yrlif...funny!

Suggestions?

My wife loves anything by Janet Evanovich.
I am partial to Clive Cussler but Evanovich (specifically the number series) is great for laughs.

This month I have listened to:
Extremely loud and Incredibly Close- Foerr
Anansi Boys- Gaiman
Between an Rock and A Hard Place- Ralston (awesome true life near death climbing accident, the dude cuts his own arm off)
Bud Not Buddy- Curtis (Kids book, but GREAT reader)

other mystery/thrillers I have loved listening to include anything by Michael Palmer (medical mysteries) and Jonathan Kellerman (main character is a child psychiatrist)

a lot of times when I check out audiobooks from the library or dl them from audible.com, I browse for readers I know I like, since sometimes that can make or break an audiobook...

I see your mystery/suspense and raise you . . . free mystery/suspense podcasts!

http://www.soapdetectives.com/

They do a lot of noir radio detective stories, including, most recently . . . DRAGNET!

I might have one more suggestion in the mystery/suspense area: Michael Chabon's "The Final Solution: A Story of Detection". It's a very well written Sherlock Holmes tribute. Brilliant. Bonus points: read by Michael York. But that one you have to buy.

As for non-fiction, I've listened to the entire 9/11 commission report as an audiobook. The first several chapters are strangely compulsive listening.

Elmore Leonard (pretty much anything)

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy(whole series)

Two of my favorites for audio books.

Yes, I didn't really like the reader for Million Little Pieces.

I've read Palmer too, I'll check out Kellerman!...sounds interesting. I remember the rock climber, I'll look at that one too. I get mine from iTunes.

Thanks possum, I knew you'd respond

possum, I also read Between a Rock and a Hard Place. Good book. The article from Outside mag got me interested in his story initially. Also read Krakauer's Into the Wild and Dugard's Surviving the Toughest Race on Earth.

I love audiobooks too. I got hooked when I was travelling a lot, but I also like to be able to exercise my mind and body at the same time.

The best performance I have ever heard, bar none, was Peter Francis James reading Joe Klein's Primary Colors.  It may be out of "print" - most of the copies I found on line are read by Blair Underwood. I'm sure he does a fine job, but the James edition is worth looking for.

Patrick Tull is another great narrator - I loved his narration of George Orwell's Animal Farm as well as the entire Master and Commander series by Patrick O'Brian. If stories of the sailing Navy float your boat (har) there's none better.

Ken Ohst gives a good reading of Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels

James Armstrong's voice was perfectly suited both for Antione de St. Exupery's Wind, Sand, and Stars and John Muir's My First Summer in the Sierras

BTW, if you haven't yet discovered www.audible.com, go there at once.

This service gives you unlimited audiobooks per month - sorta like Netflix but for audiobooks. I've been a member since January and it's worth every penny.

Isn't that the porn classic from the '70s? If so, it's probably more pounding than riveting.

try this one

Confederacy of Dunces, John Kennedy Otool. A classic New Orleans story that I read twice many years ago. Got the book on tape, the reader was phenomenal.

"Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane"

Tania...you are SOO right. I was going to start a book thread and recommend this book. Top book I've read this year, maybe top 5 all time. Great, Great book and story. Dennis Lehane also wrote Mystic River, FYI.

Other ideas...

"Shadow Divers", "Into Thin Air"

Both non-fiction adventure stories that I think an active person like Comet and others here would enjoy.

Ohh..."into thin air" SO GOOD! Already listened to it.

Ok guys, checked out audible.com. The last 2 books I downloaded from iTunes were $3 cheaper each than audible.....so, think I'm going to go with iTunes unless audible has something iTunes doesn't.

Audible is good if you are on their monthly subscription, otherwise it's not surprising that you found the other stuff cheaper.

Anything read by Frank Miller is excellent. I'm listening to The Testament by John Grisham right now, so far I'm liking it.

The Sigma Protocol: Robert Ludlum
The Murder Room: P.D. James

were pretty good as well.
