I am training with a group and we are starting to do longer distance on the bikes. I have a road Tommaso road bike and my friend has a Cannondale Tri bike. He is thinking of getting a road bike instead because he thinks he would be more comfortable training on the road bike because of all of the mileage. My view is you practice how you play and he should use the tri bike to practice. What is everybody elses thoughts. Maybe I am just questioning him because I have been saving up for a bright shiny new tri bike for next season and I'm tired of my road bike.

Suuuuuuuuuuure. Ask a bunch of triathletes if (you or) your friend should get another bike. You think anyone here is going to say no?

I put the bulk of my mileage on my road bike, increase the mileage on the tri bike as the season picks up. He should keep the tri bike, buy a new road bike.

I could suggest you and your friend just swap out, but you never know what you can catch by doing that.

A lgood number of roadie group rides in Atlanta do not welcome tri bikes and/or insist that you not utilize the aerobars in the belief that it is less stable/more dangerous to others.  Not sure that is a factor in this decision making equation ...

Otherwise I believe it is a matter of comfort insomuch as you may not want that aggressive of a geometery for that length of time.

As someone who just recently got a tri bike, I still love my road bike and enjoy the ride (comfort) it gives me over my tri bike.

And my road bike is Red so that is also a plus

Bear, I do not look down on bike-swappers. That is their lifestyle choice. But my friend with the tri bike is about 7 inches shorter than me so it just wouldn't work out. Not that those things ever do in the long run.

7 inches shorter, that sounds like a personal problem

He SAYS his friend is 7 inches shorter, but you know you can't trust guys in matters of size.

Just make sure, if you swap bikes, to use one of those neoprene (not latex or sheepskin) seat covers. Can't be too safe these days, y'know.
