Maybe this is a cultural thing, but we here in Australia as a general rule don't have cheerleaders in sport. And whats more why do women beyond the age of 18 want to be cheerleaders, I just don't get it.

Can you shed some light on this for me?

We need cheerleaders because our sports are so damn boring.  Gives us something to look at.

professional cheerleaders make decent money, many are dancers or gymnasts, and it is a job. They are entertainers. Why do grown men want to do any of the **** they do?

Our sports have so many long pauses (short American attention span I suppose), that they're almost necessary. What I don't understand is why baseball, the dullest of them all, doesn't have them.

As for the motives of women, if I knew that, I'd be a wealthy man.

Ummm...Attention?! I'm sure some of them genuinely want to cheer/dance, but for the most part I'd say attention. If it was for the community/charity work, they could devote a lot more time to it not being a cheerleader.

It's not as vapid as it seems on the surface. They are baiscally athletes and dancers - not just a bunch of giggling chicks with pom-poms. The perks are that your job rocks! Front line seats to top sporting events, performing for thousands of enthusiastic crowds, and meeting lots of hottie men! What a great job!

Why do we have them? Who knows...one of those American things that just happened?

Ok, I can't help it...sigh, I dabbled in gymnastics a little, could probably manage a few moves that would result in me breaking something.

Actually cheerleaders make very little money. If they make money, it is usually from things like calendars and appearances. They certainly don't make enough from it to make a living at it. I knew a San Diego Charger cheerleader. Very very beautiful, but dumb as rocks. Cheerleading for her was like a second job. She was only making $100 a game and this was about 5 years ago. It was all about being discovered and I sensed that she wouldn't have minded marrying a player. Did I mention she was hot?

actually they really don't make that much money only about $40.00 a game plus some appearance fees. Also the scholarships are not for the pro cheerleaders, only the college level. I had the great fortune to hang out with one of the Atlanta Falcon Cheerleaders squads a couple of weeks ago they were wonderful young ladies who had values, real jobs, and college aspirations. They put in about 30 hours a week with the team and used the contacts they made to further their careers in event planning, real estate etc. They aren't allowed to fraternize with the players and they actually put up with a lot of crap with a gracious smile and fun outlook.

So as to why a grown woman would be a cheerleader. Mostly for the oppurtunity to meet people they wouldn't normally get to meet. (Celebrities included) Learn how to deal with the public and have a fun experience to tell their kids.

Why don't people just understand and accept that not everyone likes the same things, has the same goals in life, or values the same ideals?

It's a fact of life that people are different.  Some people want to be cheerleaders and some people don't.

Why you ask?  Because people are different, that's what makes this world a very "interesting" place to live!

Besides, who doesn't like a nice attention **** (or any **** for that matter).
