Subject: Ways to Save Money

Ok ya'll- I am honestly thinking about quitting my job and considering taking a job that's more rewarding, yet a HUGE paycut.  I'm thinking of ways that I can change my lifestyle.  Here's a few things I came up with.

I’ll have to buy all my workout clothes either at Target or at race expos if it's discoutned- no ordering from roadrunnersports or paying full price no matter how bad I want something (target has some cute dry fit workout clothes, so this won't be a bad adjustment- I can handle it no problem!)

Continue to have run4yrlif hook me up with his Powerbar discount so I can get the drinks, gels and bars cheaper- I’ll say by to my expensive Detour energy bars and accelerade gels.

Stop drinking protein shakes and just buy lot sof egss bulk from Sam's.  (joking, but not a bad idea)

Stop getting my hair highlighted every 3 months (which costs around $60) and just go back to my natural color so I won’t have to get my roots touched up.  ( I don't want to dark and back to my natural hair color, but it would be a big money saver!)

No massages at spas- unless I can get a cute boy to give them for me for free. (this has become a habit for me)

Stop buying expensive hair care products at the salon and buy Herbal Essence products from Wal-Mart.  ( I can't help it- I love the way Aveda products smell!)

No more Bath and Body Works scented lotion- stick with the scented lotions at Wal-Mart or Target, unless I can buy cheap at the after Christmas sale.

Wash and vacuum my car myself, instead of taking it to the car wash place and paying them to give my car the works!  (I hate cleaning my car, but that's something I'll just have to suck it up and do.)

Start cooking at home more instead of eating out- hello Ramen Noodles- it’s been so long!  (I don't think I'll be at the point to resort back to Ramen Noodles, but I do need to cut back on how often I eat out)

Switch to generic cereal instead of brand cereal.  (the good stuff is way expensive!)

Find a way so that I don't sweat so much when I workout so I won't have to wash my clothes after every workout and save after- just kidding of course!

Only eat out at Pizza Joint, where it’s cheap to buy slice a pizza. Or stick with Mexican food- it's cheap and you get chips and salsa for an appetitizer.

Don’t eat at Mally’s EVERY Saturday monring after my training sessions- start ordering only order coffee and eat breakfast at home.

No Star Bucks- I’ll be buying some Folgers and making my own.

Run at the Y track or on the treadmill at the gym instead of driving to the rec center- save gas.

Make my cats eat the cheap cat food like Purina instead of the expensive Science Diet food.

Make my cats go on a diet so that they eat less and don’t go through cat food as often. And- I wouldn’t have to buy litter as often if they cut back on their diets either!  (they're chuncky adn could probably afford to loose some pounds)

Cut down on the number of races I do- I’ll really have to cut back- sniff, sniff

Pay all bills online so that I don’t have to use stamps.  (I pay most of them online but not all)

Use my home phone more and only use my cell for important calls so I can decrease my cellular plan to less minutes.

Shop at TJ Max all the time instead of the Gap.

Start coupon clipping.

Boycott all tri and bike shops to avoid impulse buys.  (impulse buys are my weakness- I do this when I get bored)

Downgrade my BT membership from bonze to normal- this will be hard, don't know if I can do that

Stop eating at nice burrito joints like Barberito's and eat Taco Bell burritos- this will be hard, don't know if I can do that

Cancel my runnersworld subscription- don't know if I can do this.

*But I'll be saving money for not having to drive out of my way to work everyday since I'd be working out of my home- so that's a bonus!

Make my body be more efficient when training, so that I consume less gels.  (not sure how to do this)

The food stuff (bulk from Sams, Starbucks, eating out) adds up. You will save more than you think. I save so much by bringing my lunch to work (and I eat healthier too) and not eating out that much. Things like RunnersWorld and BT aren't that expensive (to me) when there are other things to cut out.

Bulk detergents, cereal, and other dry goods save you a lot too. I don't really use things like paper towels, unnecessary waste too, and I use dish rags to clean that can be washed. It all adds up.

I rarely pay to have my car washed and when it needs vaccuming I have my mom do it when I visit her (he he he) or just go to the vacuum thing at gas stations.

When I find my running shoes on sale, I buy 2 or 3.

When you moving? Want help packing? I'm sure Jim will do it for you-quickly. bwahhhaaahhhaa...just kidding. I'll help if you want.

I'm going through some cost cutting measures right now by doing the following:

1. changing auto insurance to a lower priced company
2. raise my deductible to $1000 per car.
3. change home owners insurance.
4. change my electrical energy provider

Great ideas.  This lower paying job is for Disgusta, so no moving would be required.  Oh yeah- i forgot to add something to the list.

Sell Comet's Explorer without telling her and keep the money   Ha,ha!

We haven't been running the heat, except when people come over, to save money. It's not that... brrrrr... cold. And I also shop at Sam's. Also, check the Sunday and Wednesday papers for sales at grocery stores. I avoid buying anything at full price, except I may have to splurge on some winter running clothes. Cotton's not cutting it.

You people are un-american.  You should work more so you can buy more.  If you don't have enough money, charge it, borrow it, whatever it takes so you can get more things

Seriously.......do what's best for your future.  Is the new job going to lead to something better in the future?  I don't know how old you are (29 I think) but the older you get the less sense it makes to keep starting over.

--------

That was my 1000 post by the way.  Hope you're happy.

But- the more money you make you don't really make more.  Because you just find more ways to blow it.  So there's really no difference.  To me, being happy is more important than buying things.

Here are a few more ideas for ya, Janelle:

Don't go cheap on your cat food. It's not worth it. You'll end up spending more money on vet bills because of the ailments they'll get due to being on a poor diet. Stick with the Science Diet.

Develop an indifference to material things. You will save lots of $$$ when you forsake a material life.

Ask your hairdresser if he/she will buy some good products for you at their beauty supply store and sell them to you at cost. I switched from Aveda Sap Moss shampoo and conditioner to Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Milk products and am saving LOTS on that (my hairdresser buys them for me). Also, Paul Mitchell's Tea Tree Oil shampoo is pretty good too (and gives you a nice tingle).

Oatmeal is more nutritious and oh so much cheaper than processed cereals.

Buy espresso roast coffee instead of Folgers. It's just as cheap and oohhhhh so much better tasting (and similar to what you're used to from Starbucks). You can purchase them at Publix - Naviera (look for blue packaging) and Pilon (yellow/red packaging) are both good. Pilon would be my first choice. American brands (Folgers/Maxwellhouse) would be my "never" choice. There's no need to buy 'boutique' brand coffees; an Arabica bean is an Arabica bean.

Buy a $15 Bialetti stove-top espresso maker to get your Starbucks-like fix. Add hot milk for a capuccino taste or sweetened condensed milk is YUM. Canned evaporated milk (Carnations) is very good too.

I so totally concur with the cooking at home. It saves soooooooooooo much money! (and is healthier too!) I HATE having to shell out money for a crappy sandwhich at work when I know I could have brought something that I would have liked and it would have costs less.

Your car insurance will go down if you are working from home (less milage on the road).

As I write this, I am anxiously awaiting my next paycheck. Maybe I should take some of the above advice as well...

Second, 29 is almost 30.  Ha ha.  Janelle is old.

Third, how "future" are you talking?  Are you talking future as in Back to the Future II, or as in next week?

Fourth, I tend to only partly agree with your final statement.  Suppose that I do something now that I think will make me happy in 10 years, but it ends up sucking.  Wouldn't I be better off always making myself happy now.  In ten years, when its now, I can work on being happy then too. ( i know that doesn't make a whole lot of sense.  but there was a point in time when I thought that the job I took when graduating college would make me happy and financially solid after 10 years.  turns out I hated it after 10 days)

I totally agree! Nothing pisses me off more than paying for food and it sucks AND knowing I could have made better.

Oh Janelle and Chippy....buy ready made pizza dough from Whole Foods (don't think you have one) or Publix. In the bakery section, refridgerated case. Liitle olive oil, some tomatoes, freash basil, little cheese. A $5 homemade pizza. YUM!!! Its lasts me for 4 pizzas too.

Agree- you needed to use that one for a speech or something

Second, 29 is almost 30.  Ha ha.  Janelle is old.

Better watch what you say you little young punk.  Havne't you been taught to respect your elders??

Third, how "future" are you talking?  Are you talking future as in Back to the Future II, or as in next week?

That's where I'm at.  I would rather be happy now, than keep a good paying job and be miserable.  I mean, what if I were to die tomorrow?  I'd die being unhappy with my job.  Not the way I want to go.

Janelle:  You didn't acknowledge anything I said.  First of all, I spent my 1000th post on you and I get no kudo's?  Second, aren't you too old to be starting over in careers?

You think 29 is too old?  You're never too old to start anything.  If I thought of myself that way, I would have thought that I was too old to tri, too old to be running, too old to travel, etc.  I'm young and single- my life is just beginning!

Third, is this new job going to lead to something better in the future?  You should think about where you'll be 10 years from now, not where you are nowIn 10 years from now, I know that I don't want to be sitting in a cubicle looking at paper all day.  I know that much!

Looks like your gonna be the Walmart momma. You need to find yourself a rich boyfriend at play leech. Some of the things your thinking about doing I already do. Though I was called a metrosexual by a guy at work because I hit the tanning place in the winter, get $20 haircuts, like Bath and Body body butter, especially the mango. Hey can't help if my neighbor sells the stuff. But not cleaning your own car, I hate it too but I do it at work. And massages, my best friends mom is a massage therapist, though it was kind of weird the first time. But the bottom line is you can do it. I found a Starbucks by my LBS who gives firefighers free drinks. It's all about networking. As far as ramen noodles, I will never eat them again. I ate so many while on my ship, the smell is enough to make me barf. I also just bought some Body Armour knock off stuff at Walmart and it's not bad. I too am impulsive but you just have to think twice. Hence the mountain bike I just put in layaway. Oh well

Good!

Good! (Wanna talk to my wife?)

Good, but not all the way back to Ramen Noodles!

Never understood people who drive to somewhere so they can run (by themselves).

Warning!! Some of the very cheap cat food may cause some (ahem) digestive problems for your cats, significantly increasing the kitty litter consumption.

Good luck sorting out life and all.

I'd suggest as a starting point, tracking all of your expenses for several months. Then decide what items are out-of-whack with your goals and priorities. Thankfully, you didn't mention charitable giving as a place to cut (but it should be looked at in light of the new paycheck.)

Not your post, but watch buying food at Sam's Club. If you need pre-processed foods, it is one of the least expensive places to shop. It is still expensive compared to scratch cooking (Salt, Sugar, and Fat in addition to $$.)

FWIW, we've been doing most of these for our entire married (in my case, whole) life.

LOL!  With my dating luck I'd just be happy to find someone who shares the same values as me, is athletic, and makes me laugh.  Forget about the money!
