OK - this time I titled it in a way people will know this is the Midwest / Blizzard thread. We came close last month just finishing out of 1st place by a few yards. Two things are important in this challenge.

1. Don't fall behind early - who knows if you will get a cold or some emergency or just don't have the time and energy to catch up at the end of the month.
2. Encourage, encourage, encourage one another. That was the biggest benefit I recieve last month was the enocuragment and getting to know some other BT'ers.

If you haven't signed up for a team yet and you are a midwesterner your more than welcome - just post your monthly goal here.

Swim hard as I feel another Blizzard coming!

This is our team so far and thier goals:

Morey1 – 9,000
Jszat – 8,000
Slovegreen – 14,000
Lisazapato – 10,000
Sassafrass –
Hikergerb – 13,200

I did my first swim today of the month and boy did it suck (or maybe that was me sucking air!) let's get this thing off to a good start (I don't like looking at the failure avatar).

Hey, a sucky swim is still a swim and that's yards down. Good job!  I am planning on not joining my masters class again because they met during lunch. My workload is just too high anymore to take that much time out of the middle of the day.  I hope that the swim challenge helps me to get morning swims into a habit!

Go blizzards!

I'm swamped at work also. I like to use the diversion over lunch to clear my hear for the afternoon. It's great that I am only 2 blocks from my pool.

Let's blow them away Blizzards!

I am king of the sucky swim. It is all I know!! I think we need a mantra or cheer or something. Howzabout:

Mush, Mush, Mush!
Through the ice and slush!
To Victory we push!
Raaaaaaah, Blizzards!

Yep, the sleep deprivation is kicking in and I am bored at work. But, singing that while you swim is sure to motivate or drive one insane.

Looks like a good team with nice, realistic goals. Last month the Blizzards were a huge team chock full of some kickin' swimmers. Unfortunately, a couple out of this huge bunch couldn't make their goal.

Whatever it takes, Capt. Gerb is right...get yourself going early and often. We all know how pool workouts can get derailed. We all get 100% of our goal, we can't lose. Also, assuming the rules are the same, going OVER does NOTHING. Just so everyone understands. 4 of us could be 50% over, and the 5th at half their goal, and we lose.

Joe, on that cheer...don't quit your day job
Is there a consensus on that cheer? My sig line is so full of crap from losing the last challenge.

Hey Billards!  Ready for a week of kick butt swimming?  Just for info sake, can each person put their swim distance goal in their logs so we can see it when inspiring?  My goal is to have 7 sessions of 2,000 yards each.  I'm testing a new swim schedule this month, so in the pool is the my main goal!

Who here has some good smack to toss around? I'm blank.

Hey guys! I turned in our yaradage for the week and I am happy to say there were no zeros. That is one way to stay on top of it. Let's go out and kick some fanny this week - maybe even a little sand the eyes of the Texas group!

I saw a few people mention flips turns today.... I taught myself to do them, and by no means am I an expert, but I found some information....

http://www.ehow.com/how_5299_flip-turn-swimming.html

http://www.trifuel.com/triathlon/swim/000563.php

In our masters class, our coach had some of us do flips/sommersaults down the pool to help us not inhale water. Also, if you don't tuck tight enough, practice flipping around a lane line. We also get two or three strokes away from teh wall and practice swimming up to the wall and flipping. Sometimes I still mess up my strokes/breathing getting to the wall and mess it up.

My flip turns are not the most efficient because I breathe on my last stroke to the wall and my first stroke off the wall. I think "real" swimmers (not triathlete swimmers) try to take a couple strokes before breathing off the wall to maximize the streamline and push off the wall.

Keep up the good work Blizzards!

In you do a Febuary challenge, I'm in! Probably too far along in January, plus I'm not even sure how this works.

I swim about 12,000 yds a month when I keep track.

12K a week - I am IMPRESSED!

My Wednesday swims always suck as they follow Tuesday nights strength session which leaves me a little sore. I must have been mad at myself when I set up this training program! Anyways, I am ornery enough right to to go kick up a tidal wave in the pool large enough to swamp those Utes to our west. How can they swim out there is ther any water?!

Yes, I swam in high school and was about to swim in College (DIII) but woke up and realized how much fun college could really be....

Doing a 5K swim in September (Big Shoulders).

Just remember: "If you have a lane, you have a chance"

Keep kicking...good luck all...

WE HAVE PLENTY OF WATER out here in the west ---  The puddle the BLIZZARD made when they MELTED last month helped tons, and attracted new devotee's from all over!!

GO TRISTARS!

I cranked out another 1200 yards today doing 50% of it in freestyle. My butt is dragging so I must have gotten in a good workout. Next week my pool is closed Mon (I usually swim M,W,F). I am considering doing 2 - 1800's or having to swim two days back to back. Any opinions?

Whatever you think you can stomach mentally. It's not really the 2 days in a row I'd have trouble with, it's the 3 of 4 days. ( I assume you are considering 1200 T, W, and F vs. 1800 on 2 of those days?). Here's what I would do in a perfect world...1800 on Tuesday. Thursday see how you feel...can you go 1800? If so, week over. If not, then try to do a quick 800 or something. Then, Friday you can finish up knowing it's a shorter day again.

My $.02.
