Subject: Migraine Headache relief - help
Hi! I was wondering if anyone out there suffers from migraine headaches. Lately mine have been pretty bad and I have been missing workouts as a result. I know some of them are simply caused by stress but then again there are days I just wake up with them.

Could anbody share what they do to help ease the pain. I have had these headaches for years and will take any advice I can get.

Thanks so much!
Laura

immediate non Rx (perscription) releif.. find a cold dark room.. take two excedrin.. grab an ice pack for your head and threaten anyone who comes near you with death..

I'll come in with a big second on the ice pack and excedrin. I lay on the ice pack with it at the base of my neck -- if nothing else it will help make the pain bearable until the drugs kick in.

Finding excedrin was huge for me -- it's about the only over the counter drug that helps. I just need to recognize if I feel one coming on and take it post-haste, though -- as soon as I get nauseous, I'm done because I can't keep anything down.

Finding triggers is invaluable, though... for me it was realizing that I can't skip meals, especially breakfast and lunch. I can go from hungry to migraine in about 15 minutes, no joke.

Good luck. Migraines suck.

I don't get them very often, maybe several a year and its usually stress and exhaustion related. The only thing that works for me is to turn off all the lights and sleeeeepppp....

Excedrin is the only think that works for me as well as far as over the counter drugs go. I have tried Imitrex and it does not really work for me - but I do take Amerge if a bad one comes on.

I cannot eat anything if I have a headache - it just comes back up. I have been trying to figure out what triggers them, besides hunger and I have noticed that if my Heartrate gets to high during a workout it will bring one on. Does that happen to you?

CURSES!!! The current issue of TRIATHLETE magazine has an article or Q & A section about migraines after races (similar to your heart rate question). They had some very specific ideas about what various sufferers did about that problem. I don't get migraines, so I "grazed" the article without much further thought. I just threw away the issue yesterday.

I'd highly recommend going to a magazine store or Barnes and Noble and looking through the current issue (Faris al Sultan is on the cover).

I get hormonal migraines every month (yeah, I know, my poor sweet boy toy has to live with me during all of this--he is a saint!).  Execedrin Migraine will dull the pain but not take it away completely.  But, if I can stomach a Diet Coke along with the med, it will usually help.

Also, endorphin or serotonin production helps mine, so if I can exercise, I do.  If I cannot exercise, well then my boy helps out

Finally, the computer screen really bothers me and makes the headache worse, so I don't use it at all during an episode.

I get hormonal migraines every month.

I get hormonal migraines as well. The doctor tried to put me on the patch but that didn't solve my problems. For those headaches - I start taking Excedrin the day before and it helps a lot. I usually don't exercise that day because I would probably end up getting sick.
