Hmm.. I think we can make that work.  I don't see why you can't make a time goal.  We'll have to find some standard ratio so we can determine winning teams.  How about an assumption that 10 minutes = 1 mile.  (It makes the math easy).    
  
For example, 3 people are on a team.  1&2 pledge 40 miles each.  #3 pledges 200 minutes.  The team sum would be a 100 mile goal.    
 
Nah,  just let the goal be time rather than distance.  If I pledge 200 minutes and I run 200 minutes,  (at any pace ) I've met my goal.  Since I'm trying to work on zone-based training, and mixing up my runs with different  (read unknown distance ) routes, I wouldn't want to venture what a time to distance conversion would be.  This should also vary depending on the intensity of the run.
