Subject: How do I find a users log on this site
I have a friend here, I know his user name, and I want to see his logs. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but I can't find a way to look at another users profile, aside form having him email me a link that he has copied from his computer.

I tried using the search function, and it just gave me a google search.

Any help on this one?

The easiest way is to add his username to your 'blog friend' list in your log control panel.  See part 12:

Or go to Statistics>User Listing at http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/statistics/user-listing.asp

Well, that seemed to work, BUT adding a search function would be a really cool feature down the road. I know you can search for users by geography, but not my name. For example, I knew my partners name was seth with maybe his last name. Since I wasn't sure I had to look it up alphabetically. I went to page 125 in the logs. Hmmm. "M". On to page 250. "T" is much closer. Back to 245, then 246, then 247. Bingo. It only took 4 minutes.

I'm sure that this site, like many others, is still a work in progress; and so I'd like to put in that as I develop friends, or encourage already friends to use your site, that it be easier to make that connection. Maybe, after registering, I could get a link to my log that was emailable to friends so I can have them track my progress. I tried it with the page I was logged into, but my friends didn't have my passowrd, of course. I had to access the system externally while logged out to get the right log page, and that meant slogging through page after page of users. Ugh.

Just a friendly suggestion for any open ears.

Ya know... Its funny this came up today because I was in chat earlier and wanted to see someone's blog and couldnt find it. I was looking for a search for user by screen name feature. I don't know how many other people ever need to do that, but it dosent seem hard to add to the existing search feature.

It's convenience vs. security really. The issue of security vs. other people having access to blogs has come up a number of times in different ways over the last few months.

Some changes were made to open it up a bit and give you finer control over who can view your training blog. Currently, you can make your training blog completely private so no one can see it, or accessable to BT users only, or make it available to anyone, wether a BT member or not.

A search by username function would definitely be useful, but I imagine that the easier it is to look up someone else, the more some people would feel uneasy about sharing their log.

Perhaps we could implement this feature, but temper it with 2 enhancements:
1 - the ability to 'opt out' of searches (you're unlisted in the BT phonebook)
2 - add a sub-level of security: your traing blog is accessable to BT users only, but only those on a white list of allowed users. Kind of like the 'Other Blogs' list. It would be best to keep it seperate from the 'Other blogs' list though because the idea of a white list is that it's private.

Thoughts, anyone?

I would think the ability to opt out of searches or make a log private wich a lot of folks already do would be enough... That is basically what Yahoo does.

As for privacy, this could be just me, but I dont put anything in my log that I would consider private or worth concealing... Actusally if it's in ther it's probably because I want someone to read it.

Any other thoughts?

I totally agree. I figure that right now, someone could read all my blogs, and I assume that someone will, and so I write them with that in mind. I like the idea of providing a privacy feature for those who are into that kind of thing, or who use BT as a sort of private sports journal with personal info.

That being said, I really think the search would be important. As it is, I can access anyone's page by scrolling through names anyway, and adding a search funtion is just going to make it easier to find the person I already know about; It's not going to let me find all of the single blonde women in my area that are ripe for stalking. If we weren't suuposed to have access to everyone's logs in the whole community, then privacy filters would have already been put in place, and would be more clearly explained during registration.

Just my 2c.
