I'd like to introduce myself and say that I have been a lurking fan of this site for some time now. I have found the info found here to be an excellent learning tool for myself.
My name is Kevin and I am an 36 yo Aircraft Technician in the Canadian Airforce. I am currently posted on Vancouver Island B.C. I have been training for about five months for my first triathlon that happens at the end of May.
It all started during my quest to take off some unwanted pounds. During this time I went to watch my brother-in-law complete his forth Ironman Canada and became very inspired with the whole triathlon event/process. After some encouraging words from him, I find myself on a quest to complete my first tri. I have read that triathlons can be quite addicting and I am hoping to catch the bug. I guess time will tell.
Kevin

Be fair warned, Kevin--there may be no cure for this bug! Proceed with caution! Regardless, welcome to the board--I'm glad you stopped lurking!! So what distance is your May race, and how are you feeling about the various legs??

Thanks everyone for the welcome. My Tri is on the 30th of May and it is a 750m, 20K, 5K. I am getting more nervous as every day goes by. I think I am scared of what I don't know when it comes to doing a race. I hope a lot of the questions I have will be answered as I cross the finish line. I feel pretty good as far as the different sports go. Being new to road biking I see that my leg strength is an area I will have to work on in the future.
If the bug does bite there are a couple more tri's I'd like to tackle this summer. We'll see......
Looking forward to picking everyones brain here.
Thanks again,
Kevin

Greetings Kevin, and welcome to the site. It is nice to meet a fellow Vancouver Islander!!! I'm up at the north end of the rock, running and biking with the bears and cougars!!! Our pool is closing for repairs on June 2nd, so I'll be swimming with the fishies soon too!! Yikes, it will be cold. I wasn't planning on hitting the ocean until July...oh well. My first tri is in Parksville 400m, 20k, 5k in August. I hope to do another Sprint in SanDiego in October, hopefully the Mission Bay or the Women's Reebok. This site is great and the people are helpful and encouraging. No question is too dumb!!

Welcome, Kevin, from another newbie. I got motivated at IM Coeur D'Alene last year and can't wait for my first race this year too. I think I've already caught the "bug" badly though, as much fun as I'm having with the training. If you catch it bad after your first race, there's a cool race in Chelan, WA, in July. That's not too far from the Island, it's a sprint distance and an absolutely beautiful setting for a race. Good luck with your race...and don't even try to fight the "bug!" It's got you!

Hey dolly, small world. I was looking at the Tri in Parksville as well but I couldn't wait until August to do my first. Thats why I decided to do the Comox one. Depending on how badly the bug bites, I am also thinking of doing Parksville. Might be a nice one for my first open water swim. And hey, you even get a cool finishers medal. Maybe I'll see you there : )
Thanks also to everyone else for their kind welcomes. I am getting the feeling that triathletes are a different breed of athlete. Ones that are willing to help out their fellow competitors rather than just see how badly they can beat them. That to me is very cool !!!!

Hey Kevin, when is the Comox one??? I didn't see it in the listings for Tri's in the Canuck Runner schedule of events for BC. I too am looking for one to do earlier than August, and have considered one in Vancouver and Sidney. Trouble with most of the events is that they conflict with our summer commercial fishing openings. Oh well, can only do what you can do!!! Good luck with training and with your tri in Comox. Let us know how it goes. Let me know if you plan to do Parksville. We can meet up before the race.
Have you done any open water training yet?? Our pool is closing here on June 2nd and date of reopening is unknown, so I'm gearing up ( buying a wetsuit now earlier than planned), for some training in the bay. Yikes, it will be cold.

Swim with orcas, ride with cougars, run with bears.
Darlene
