Subject: Career Management service?????? HELP!!!!

Has anyone ever used a career management or marketing service? I received a call from this company yesterday: globalcareermgmt.com and am interested in what they do, but have never considered paying someone to assist me in my job hunt. Basically they work like a head hunter but I pay them instead of the company.

They said the will help me re write me resume and all written correspondence and then coach me on interviewing. in addition to this they use their network to help get my resume out to high level HR people to find the jobs that are not yet posted.

It sounds interesting to me because I know the best stuff is not posted on the web and headhunter firms (where the employer pays) mostly seem to staff high turnover sales jobs or highly technical jobs.

I REALLY want to make a big career move, and I am getting some interviews, but not landing the jobs I REALLY want. Anyone have any advice? Thanks!

Never used a serivce like that.  Only want to comment on the interview.  No need to be nervous if you treat like a converstation where they are going to ask questions of you and you're free to ask questions of them.  And be honest.

My interview with a consulting firm when I was looking to get out of my goverment job, I was asked, "Why do you want to leave your Government job?"   Reply, "Do you want the sugar coated professional answer or my answer?"   He said he wanted to know so I gave him my direct and blunt answer.  He then understood the desire to leave.

Otherwise, have FUN making a decision and looking for something else.

Just remember going from one job to another only means you'll have the same office crap going on, just with different people and maybe different colored walls.

I would ask for reference's from them. Look for outside confirmation of theer services. My BS meter is starting to wiggle a little bit, company/services sounds fishy.

But it could be completely legit.

I know they are not a fly by night because they are in One union square (one of the nicest office buildings in downtown Seattle) and the have several other offices in other states, and I know a lot of people do this but I never have... I want to know if its really worth it.

Refrences is a really good idea...

My dad (who is a very successful businessman) always told me when looking for a job that you should never pay anyone to work for them. I would think that this applies here also. I have paid a resume writing service only because I suck at writing, but never a service to find a job. Try some networking in the field that you want to work in. Ask for an informational interview with a HR person in the field to find out what they are looking for in a candidate. Hope you are succesful! Good Luck!

I wonder if your reason for leaving a government job is the same reason I left my govt job back in August 2005. I decided to go back to school and learn a new skill and re-join the private sector.

As for going from one job to another, I could care less about office politics. I would, however, appreciate an office where my desk is free from mouse poop and rodents in general. Also, it wouldn't be half bad if my employer joined the 21st century technology wise, which means I'd appreciate a telephone that's more advanced than a rotary dial phone without a "hold" feature, and I would appreciate it if the employer would find something more professional than a "PA" system in which to make announcements, and despite severe budget woes, we still have a typing pool because many of my co-workers cannot type.

This is my understanding of the headhunter stuff, too. The employer pays for the headhunter, not the employee - at least that's the way it works at the law firm where my partner works.

A good headhunting firm will rewrite your resume for you (if necessary), coach you on how to present yourself/interview, and introduce you to their clients at no cost to you. Why not try a good headhunter first (no cost) before deciding that you need to pay someone?
