Overall Rank = 155/162

Pre-race routine:

The race started after lunch so I had an early breakfast and then had vege and chicken soup about 9.30am then nothing but CarboShotz Drink prior to the race.
Event warmup:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 59m 55s
  • 15.5 kms
  • 07m 44s  min/km
Comments:

The hill in this run really kicked my butt. I had to walk some of it as my heart rate went up to 188! Man it was hard work. I have trained quite a bit on hill runs in our area, but they were mainly shorter steeper hills with steps. This run was a continual uphill road/track. My HR moniyor is pretty accurate when I run on the flat I can do 1km per 100 calories. This run was 15.5 km, and my HRM said I'd burned 1864 calories, which would be equivalent to 18.5 km on the flat/ Very goo training for the half mary in 4 weeks.
What would you do differently?:

I got stomach cramps on the downhill section, I'm not sure if my drink agreed with me. First time I'd used Carboshotz drink. Might try Powerade or something on my longer runs before the half mary. Really need to stick to running plan the next few weeks.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

I couldn't get my HR under control on the uphill and it wore me out.

Event comments:

I put too hard for my ability, but it was a great challenge and I know what to expect for next year. Also great for training for the half marathon. This is my first off road running race ever, and it was great!

Pacing and HR, which I guess go hand in hand, are two difficult things to control on race day.  Despite that, it sounds like you had a bunch of fun in what I have heard is questionable weather out there (canceled the swim for IMNZ and halved the bike + run).

Did you have to do orienteering as well as run the course?

Hey there Brian, no we didn't have to orienteering, it was a well marked course.   The lady that did the timing at the end said I looked very fresh at the end hehe, she said a lot of people were looking haggard

Nice work Kelly!

These kinds of runs are a good opportunity to iron out those GI/nutritional issues.
The course reads like hard work, you did a great job! Nothing like a race to keep you motivated & focussed for the next goal.
