Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() No, it's not for the reasons you'd think. In fact, nearly every year without fail the nominees for "Best Picture" are films that just don't interest me and don't entertain me. There are exceptions, but the Academy seems to punish movies that actually do well at the box office most years. Seems like a "we're smarter than you" gesture to the worldwide audience. I dunno. Might just be me. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can see many people like to go to a movie for pure entertainment. If a movie that has a stronge message behind it, or prompt you to think about something social/religious/philosophical, people would thing it's too "heavy". I don't really care for romance movies - people told me they cried when they watched Ghost or Titanic and I was like "ok....". I saw Brokeback Mountain as another romance movie. Nothing deeply moving, nothing too beautiful, but interesting. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I always love that when the Oscars roll around, I can pretty much be sure I have seen none of the top movies. Always makes me laugh. Why didn't Shrek get nominated for best picture. ![]() |

Wife, Mother, Friend. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't wanna see it either. Did you see the Western Montage at the start of the Academy last night? oh....my... too funny. Lets see... no, I haven't seen anything except Narnia. Saw "Walk the Line" last weekend, didn't think it was nothin' special. Why did a song about a pimp get an award? What's the world comin' to? Or do I miss something here? oh, I forgot, I did see "March of the Penguins". Talk about your endurance athletes, er, animals.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The only motivation I have to see "Brokeback" is that it is directed by Ang Lee. Like Celeb said, I am not into "heavy" movies nowadays. Besides, there are other things that I am interested in now (read: tri training and BT) that movies is only one of my many hobbies. Not interested in movies that require too much thinking or prsonal reflection, you know what I am sayin'. With that said, I do wholeheartedly recommend "Wallace and Gromit; Curse of the Were Rabbits". In fact, I would recommend the previous 3 short films of "Wallace and Gromit." |

Another Wallace and Gromit fan here! Our whole family loves those films. I enjoy the subtle humor. The kids love Gromit. We even quote lines from the movies. "Porridge today Gromit. It's Tuuuuesday!" I had to let my kids stay up past bedtime to see if they won the Oscar. |

![]() | ![]() courtney_leone - 2006-03-06 8:09 AM I also have no desire to see 'Brokeback Mountain.' My mom saw it and hated it. Plus, I know what happens in the end. Heh heh..... The only one I've seen is Crash. Amazing movie if you want to made to think and face realities other than the one that you live in. That's a big if. Plenty of times I'm not in the mood for that much thinking. But still, amazing. |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i usually hate the acadamy awards picks, so I never watch them. That's why I watched Austin Powers last night instead of the awards. Much more entertaining. I'm a fan of movies that make you think, but not about some heavy moral implication. I like the ones that are twisted and strange (basicly anything Quentin Tarentino). One of my all time favorite movies is memento. Just when you think you have it figured out, you don't and even watching it a second time, you pick up on new stuff. That makes for a quality film. I also like the historical movies like Gladiator, the Patriot, Master and Commander, ect. |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I liked Crash as a rental, but Best Picture??? Another movie that dispenses with subtlety and cracks you in the head with the "point". I hope movies like this don't have to exist to make people think about topics like racism... |

![]() | ![]() Opus - 2006-03-06 10:36 AM I liked Crash as a rental, but Best Picture??? Another movie that dispenses with subtlety and cracks you in the head with the "point". I hope movies like this don't have to exist to make people think about topics like racism... I don't think it was so much the blatant racism as it was the levels of racism, where it comes from, who exhibits it, and the fact that sometimes their fears are justified, sometimes they are not and sometimes they just don't matter. ***Spoiler warning*** Matt Dillon starts out as the most vile character and becomes a true hero at one point. Does that mean he's not a racist? Then the rookie that is disgusted and offended by his behavior does his own reprehensible thing. I didn't think the point of the movie was racism as much as it was that people, and our interaction with each other is complex and we need to figure out a better way to deal with it. Even if you think you are fine with it all you still have to deal with people who are not. Never in history has humanity had to deal with the collision of cultures that we are facing now and are still in the beginning stages of learning to cope. I realize I sound like I'm drinking the "Crash" kool-aid and I don't mean to sound like I'm on a soapbox. Sorry. |

I am always hoping for something different that will really surprise me, and Crash didn't. I give them credit for not telling only one side of the story (everybody does something stupid, not just the white guy or the black guy). In fact, the nicest character sinks to the lowest depth of stupidity (rookie cop). Like I said, I liked the movie, and I'm glad that the people who may not have realized that we are all individuals who cannot be judged by the colour of our skin have seen a movie that illustrates that, but I was hoping for more. |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I saw two movies this weekend: Walk the Line and End of Suburbia. Walk the Line was good, mostly because I love Johnny Cash, but it reminded me a lot of Ray. So I thought the movie was good, but nothing special. End of Suburbia was great. I watched it twice. I doubt it was even nominated though. Jen |

Elite![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I want to see it because I don't like not knowing enough about something that people think is controvercial to have an opinion. And, I often like "deep" movies. I work with a lady who was saying she was glad it didn't win because of the homosexual themes and they are immoral. She was glad that the Dolly Parton song did not win because it is for a movie that dealt with a transexual. Of course, she never saw either movie. I have to admit that I found the "pimp" song rather vulgar. But I guess that just because something is not to my taste doesn't mean it is not without artistic merit.
