Subject: Vacation Time
Okay - So my wife and I NEED to take a little vacation somewhere and we're having a tough time deciding where to go.

Here are the requirements
1. Needs to be withing a 4 hour flight or drive from Boston, MA.
2. Needs to be something we haven't done before (We've been to the Baltic States - Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania), Russia, and Poland, England and some Carribbean, as well as most Eastern US (yes, we are young and well travelled)
3. Relaxation is key - I want the opportunity to sit down, eat breakfast and read the paper in relative peace.
4. Fewer kids (we need to get away from our own for a couple of days.)
5. We enjoy history type stuff.

I am interested in your ideas. We've been tossing around the idea of Iceland, Bahamas/Bermuda, and a Spa in either that Catskills in NY or the Pocono's in PA. Also considering Ireland, Scotland. Any thoughts and experiences? Thanks.

Nova Scotia has everything you listed. And the nicest most generous people you can imagine.

Republic of Panama - specifically, the Gamboa Rainforest Resort - is about a 3 hr (or less?) flight out of Miami. Does not meet your flight time but too bad - it's well worth the trip.

It's getting towards the end of rainy season so you might luck out on the rain. Then, again, experiencing a rainforest downpour is HEAVEN.

You won't get better service or food.

DAMN. I'm homesick...

Possum - oops, I forgot to add that to the list. My moms side of the family is Acadian (I am actually a decendant of loyalists who were kicked out of the US. hehehe) and we took a weeklong trip to Novie and PEI 2 years ago. I would love to go back but my wife wants to do something different. I suggested Newfoundland and New Brunswick but that was a non-starter as well. I LOVED Novie and would recommend it to anyone.

We live outside Boston and we're hoping to get away...

Iceland! Direct flight from Boston to Reykjavik is only 4 hour! Surprising short. I have never been there. Saw a documentary of Icelandic people eating rotten shark, sheep's head, ram's testicles and Bjork.

Playa del Carmen or Tulum, Mexico. It's a 3 1/2 flight from Boston.

I highly recommend going to Ireland. Beautiful country, plenty of country inns in places like the Burren in County Clare that will be quiet. Plenty of history to see all around the country if you want to find it.

Explore the western US... Southern Utah is gorgeous. Northern AZ. Bits and pieces of Nevada are worth seeing. Western CO. Olympic NP in WA. Idaho has some gorgeous country. Western Wyoming is stunning. And then there's Montana, but who'd want to see that....

On one of my best vacations ever, I was watching the sun set on a PERFECT summer evening on the deck of an awesome log cabin in Kalispell, Montana.

Yeah, I bet it sucked. Montana smells of odoriferous cheese and the people are mean, toothless and rarely bathe. And they carry guns.

Only an Iowan would think of Montana as a vacation mecca.

Hey, if you have Acadian roots, come down here and see what happened to the French settlers that your people exiled. Nothing's more laid back than Cajun Country.

Fly to Tampa, rent an RV, and go camping at Fort DeSoto Park in Florida.
Take your bikes if you can.

I just got back from there, I couldn't believe how relaxing it was.
White sandy beaches, bike paths, very few kids.
Doplphins swimming off the piers, finding sand dollars in the gulf.
Just nice.
