Subject: Now THAT's cold swimming!I just read this in the April issue of Popular Mechanics: News Briefs: Mind over very cold matter. With only a Speedo for warmth, British swimmer Lewis Pugh set two new records for the most southerly swim-at 65 degrees south latitude, off the Antarctic coast-and for the longest polar swim, covering a mile in 30 minutes, 30 seconds in water just a few degrees above freezing. Pugh's extensive cold-water training gave him the power of "anticipatory thermogenesis": The mere sight of cold water sends his body temperature soaring to 101 F. |
