Subject: Terrain for Road Bike Tires
I am going to start riding on road bike tires for the first time this weekend. Up until now, I have been riding a mountain bike. I have just gotten used to being able to go wherever I want on the mountain bike.

So my question is, how limited am I on the road bike as far as what I can or can not do on the road bike tires? For example, can I jump down a curb to get to the road? Or can I ride over a small patch of dirt, gravel or grass to get to the park. If the trail I am riding on has some dirt or gravel parts, is that ok? Or should I strictly stay on clean, maintained city streets?

You're only limited by your ability to keep the rubber side down. Jumping curbs with impunity depends on a couple of things...your weight, the height of the curb, your ability to land softly, tire inflation pressuren, the toughness of your wheels, and your willingness to fix anything you break.

How tough are your wheels? Good road tires are tough...the wheels may not be compared to mtn bike wheels.

I ride crushed gravel (6/10 miles most trips) all the time on Pro2 tires and an Sworks road bike. No flats as of yet.

Umm, I jumped a small curb my first time out on my road bike and busted both tubes. It was a curb on a driveway... so like a 3 in height. Yeah, not cool. I weigh ~ 160 lbs (well I guess it was more like 170 lbs when this happened), so I don't know if my weight had something to do with it.

I am very carerful jumping off curbs and I never bunny hop getting on them with my road bike...too klutzy to do it without wrecking tire and wheel.

Gravel, grass, dirt...you're generally OK...getting on curbs... dunno.

Oh and I wish I weighted 180# A good bit past that.
