I can start mentoring now and will be around all throughout the race season.

Name: Shellback1998 (Scott)

Story: Body composition is my biggest limiter and I struggle with getting to a good racing weight.  A friend of mine was on the Biggest loser 2009 season 8 (Rudy Pauls), and did a triathlon back in 2009. He mentioned that I would never be able to beat him in a triathlon. I never even knew what a triathlon was but at that moment I was committed. At that time, I made that decision to lose weight and to beat Rudy. The next day, I weighed myself and was over 300lbs. I was like what did you do to yourself. I drove to the local YMCA and began working out. Now, being athletic having a football, lacrosse, hockey and baseball background I knew this wasn’t going to be an overnight transformation. I was ashamed that I let myself go, I blew up from not being active and was embarrassed. At my job, I sit at a desk all day long therefore I wasn’t as active therefore I wasn’t burning as many calories as I should have been. So eating more calories than you burn, eventually lbs starting going up , I knew it was going to be a journey and not happen overnight. I went to Dick’s Sporting goods and got my first heart rate monitor. I began reading books, and read all about aerobic zones. So I wanted to make sure I was making each work out beneficial.  So, even though, I knew I could go faster, harder I stayed committed and focused to lose the weight. Now at this time in my training I was able to go at 1 ½ on the elliptical with no problem.  So being as heavy as I was, I stayed on the elliptical for a month. I started counting my calories and made sure my body was always in a deficit. One day I looked over my shoulder one day and seen a group of people getting ready for a class, I was like what’s this. I found out that it was a Spin class. Knowing you have to sign up for these, I signed up for the next morning. I have cycled before so had the shoes already so brought them as well. I came to the class strapped in and then instructor opened me with open arms. The class began and I watch the class on the movements as to what the instructor was spouting out. 3rd position, 2nd position hover cadence 120+. It was all new but it came fast. Now I was even more hooked. I now find myself doing 4-5 spin classes a week followed either by Elliptical to get more burn.  Well, monotonous started stepping in, and the elliptical started getting boring. I decided to try to go on the treadmill one day. I started going slow watching my HR making sure I stayed in my zones.  Increased speed then looked down. I just ran 2.5 miles and I was in shock. The last time I ran that far was back in college when I played lacrosse.  So, now I began feeling good about myself and started to swim. First couple of times, 25 yards was daunting. Then I continued to increase my distance. Signed up for a masters swim at the YMCA and I was well on my way.

Family Status: Single, never been married and has no kids.

Current Training: I am currently working with QT2 Systems with their Mission plan program.  I made great strides last year on my 70.3 distances and I plan to increase that this year. Currently, I have on my schedule 4, 70.3's and a few sprints.

2011 Races: Escape the Cape, Onset MA, Providence Ironman, 2 Day 180 mile Bike MS Ride, Whaling City, Sharon's Back, Pumpkinman 70.3

Planned 2012 Races:  Ironman California 70.3, MS Bike ride on Martha's Vineyard, Whaling City, Sharon’s Back Sprint, Rev 3 Old Orchard Beach, Pumpkinman 70.3, Buzzards Bay Sprint, Duxbury Sprint

Weightloss: Continue to get to my goal of 195, Currently at 225 (Gained since last season).

What Will Make Me a Good Mentor: I love training for and racing triathlons; either by always giving advice of the mistakes I’ve made or to support all the Newbs. Triathlon is a huge part of my life. If, I am picked to Mentor for 2012, this will be my second season being a mentor. I enjoyed seeing all the people who I mentored achieved and surpassed their goals was truly amazing. I am glad to have had that opportunity.

Name: Everlong (Scott)

Story: I've always worked out and played competitive sports long into adulthood and I'm 44 next Tuesday the 10th. I was more into the weights side of things and loved heavy gym workouts. I never enjoyed running but now do. Training has become my solitude and time to think.

Family Status: Married with 4 daughters ages 1-9. I train at the crack of dawn or before not to take away my time with them.

Current Training: Last week I did 6800 yards in the pool, 21.5 miles running and 116 miles on the bike (trainer).

2011 Races: Quincy half marathon, Cohasset 5K race by the Sea, Charles River one mile swim,
Ashland Olympic Tri, Stamford KIC IT Olympic Tri and NYC Olympic Tri.

Planned 2012 Races:  Quincy half marathon 3-18-12. I want to beat last year by better than a minute per mile.

Patriot HIM 6-16-12. This is my first. I'd like to go sub 5:45 but will be happy with sub 6.

Pumpkinman HIM 9-9-12. Improve on Patriot.

SmuttyNose RockFest Marathon 9-30-12. First Marathon so just looking to finish but I think I can go sub 9.

Weightloss: I'm just under 6 feet with a good size frame and weigh 183. I might be able to hit 177-ish for my perfect race weight but weightloss isn't an issue for me.

Hello ..

My name is Gloria I would like to join the group. After a two year break from training and doing triathlons I am ready to get back in the game. I had a friend that kept asking me to do a triathlon with her I thought she was crazy at my weigh at that time 275 how would that be possible? However I read the book Slow Fat Triathlete and was hooked if the author could do so could I…I’ve was hooked !

Races- I have completed two sprint triathlons and attempted an Olympic triathlon but unfortunately due to a bike accident at the end of that part of the race I was unable to complete it. That sidelined me for the rest of the season since surgery was necessary on the injured knee. Ready to get back to it the next season I had another spill on the bike and had to have surgery on my other knee. The knees are doing great and feeling strong so I want to complete in several triathlons this season starting with a sprint tri in April.

Family- I am divorced have 4 grown children and 5 adorable grandkids .

Work- After the divorce I went back to school and got my degree in 2010 I know have a great job as an accountant.

Weight loss- is big focus in my life I have been a member of Weight Watchers for several years now and have lost 60 lbs so far with about that much more to go. I am a devoted member of WW and think it’s a great program.

Training- Just started for the April Sprint tri , working out a race schedule now to train for.

Thanks I am looking forward to the mentoring and group support !

Welcome to the group Gloria. That sucks about the accident but way to power through and keep going.

Did 2:30 on the trainer this morning. That first ride after a recovery week I just seem to get saddle sore so much faster than all the rides after that.

14.75 mile run this morning. I hate doing my long run the day after my long bike but it was the only way to get it in this week.

Pace was 9:25 which it had been 9:14 the previous three long runs.

Heart rate average was 144 which the previous three it was 148-149.

So overall just fatigued especially once I got to mile 13 but overall a solid run.

I would like to join your group.  My info is a follows:

Name: Craig (CraigS)

Story:  I’m 44 years old.  In 2009 a younger co-worker challenged me to a duathlon in Central Park (2 mi/12 mi/2 mi).
I told him not only would I finish, but I would beat him.  I didn’t own a bike and I had not done any consistent running since college (more than 20 years prior).  I started going on the bike at the gym and hitting the pavement for running.  Soon I bought a road bike (a Cannondale on e-bay).  Well, I finished the race and loved it (my co-worker did not show up for the race that day).  The atmosphere was great and the people were friendly (in NYC no less).  After the duathlon I decided that I shoud try a tri (since I would only have to run once).  I completed 3 Olympic tris in 2010 (Stamford KIC IT, Westchester, and Park City Mossman).  But always at the back (and I mean way back of the pack).  I thought 2011 would be a better year but I never really dropped the weight I thought I would and did not train as hard as I wished.  I had signed up for 4 tris for 2011 but only attended 2 of them (Stamford Kic It and the Mossman Tri (sprint)).  I had to defer NYC and was unable to attend the Westchester.  I’m hoping this year will be a better year.  Like everyone else, work and family tends to get in the way with training but I’m determined to get my training in. My goals are to lose weight (want to lose about 17 – 20 pounds) and to move from the back of the pack to the middle of the pack. I’m a Trusts & Estates attorney (estate planning, estate administration, etc.) with my own practice in Westchester, New York.

Family Status: Married with 3 children ages 11, 8 and 4.  Thus, I try to squeeze in my workouts early in the morning and during the middle of the day during lunchtime.

Current Training: I just started the Winter Maintenance Program.  Due to the winter, I have my bike on a trainer.  I
still try to run outside, though, weather permitting.  Last week I completed 4,400 yards swimming, 28.5 miles on the bike, and about 6.3 miles running.  In addition, I did strength training twice last week).

2011 Races: Stamford Kic It, Mossman Sprint

Planned 2012 Races: NYC Nautica Tri (Olympic); Weschester Tri (Olympic).  I plan to add more as I get closer to them.

Weightloss: I’m about 5’10.5”.  Continue to get to my goal of 170-173.  Currently, at 190.  I’ve been living a Vegan lifestyle since October (after watching the documentary Forks over Knives) and that is helping me get my weight down.

Craig welcome to the group and nice bio... Do you still use that cannondale bike? Do you train using your Heart? e.g. do you have training zones establish?

I would like to join your group

Name: Dan

Story: I'm 40 years old, never have done a triathlon. I've always been involved in sports and weight training. I played football in High School and College until a knee injury sidelined that career. I also trained and fought MMA in my early 30's. I've always stayed in the gym and weight lifting/bodybuilding has always been part of my life. I recently began running with a couple of guys in the gym that are training for the Livestrong half marathon in Austin. We started going to the pool and swimming two nights a week a couple of months ago for cross training. Found out that I am a decent swimmer. That's when the triathlon idea popped into my head. I had a road bike that I rode in high school and college but now only have a MT bike that I ride. I ride about 10-20 miles a week right now. I've been doing that as part of my cardio training since October. I've been doing all this just to remain active and lead a healthy lifestyle with no real goals in mind until I decided to try a triathlon.

Family status: I have been married for 16 yrs this February. I have 2 children, my son is 15 and I have a 5 yr old daughter. My wife is an avid weight lifter and is very supportive of my training goals.

Current training: I lift weights 5 days a week. Swim 2 days a week but about to increase it to 3. I try to run 2-3 days a week but have been nursing some calf issues.

2011 races: I ran a 5k back in October, never have done a triathlon.

Planned 2012 races: I want to do a sprint tri in March. It consist of a 300m swim (pool). 13 mile bike, and a 5k run.

Weight loss: I don't think I have much to loose. I'm 5'10" and weigh 215#. I'm at 10% body fat right now.

Still using the Cannondale bike.  I train with a Polar heart rate monitor, but I need to re-establish my heart rate zones.  Any tips on figuring out my max HR?

Also, I recently started using Generation UCAN for nutrition during my training.  The other products just have too much sugar.  Has anyone else tried this product?

I dont have a road or tri bike right now. I have an old Diamond Back Ascent MT bike. I've been cross training with it for a while. I have only been putting in 10-20 miles a week. They are pretty tough miles though. I live in the country and my riding right now consist of hilly dirt roads. I have a 10 mile route that I can do in 40 minutes with those conditions.

I am going to see about borrowing a road bike for my sprint in March, but so far no luck. You think it would be ok to do the sprint on my MT bike? I would probably look like a dork but I don't mind. If this is a good experience I'm sure I will invest in a high end bike to continue my training. There is great country and farm roads that are not dirt for me to ride here.

Use your Mountain bike, There will be plenty of people similar to you. Buying a bike is a big investment!  You need to be 100% committed to the sport. Once you're there then I definitely suggest getting a road bike, or even a TT bike.

Totally agree. I did my first sprint on a hybrid. The one part that's hard is people on the carbon bikes are just blowing by you. I was about 5 minutes from the end of the bike and a guy pulls up along side of me with a 4K bike and says hey same age. I took his number in my head to compare. I finished the swim 4 minutes ahead of him, our T1 and T2 were the same but he beat me by a full 6 minutes on the bike. I ended up beating him by over 3 minutes on the run to have the faster time.

At that point I knew I was commited  and bought the TT bike last spring. If I was just doing sprints I may have opted for a cheap road bike but I knew I wanted to do at least an HIM.

You could go the in between route. There are always road bikes on Craig's List and Ebay for cheap money and the fit isn't as specific as a TT bike. You can usually flip it for the same amount you paid for it as well. There's a guy here who posted a story about how he bought a $200 road bike on Craig's and between there and ebay he kept flipping bikes after adding components. In the course of two years he bought a Cervelo P3 and it only cost him his time for doing all the bike flipping.
