Always an interesting topic. This guy's been cleared by the cops, apparently.

What the he!! iswrong with kids these days! Seriously, good for the biker. He just saved the tax payers some dough by not having to pay for the incarceration this kid was surely headed for.

He also saved a whole bunch of people who would have been downstream from him the traumatic experience of being mugged or worse.

Best comment, "Play stupid games, win stupid prizes". (which followed, "Choose your actions, choose your consequences")

S'okay, one of the comments on the page was about how cool the guy's Dura-Ace wheels are.

Bento box, jersey pocket, inside shirt pocket, handful of places. Full sized and/or heavy guns don't work worth a damn to carry like that though.

Fred D - 2012-01-30 3:59 PM Wonder what the anti gun carry people will say about this one?

That the entire situation is a shame. I understand why it happened and why the biker was justified in the eyes of many, including the court. But the entire situation is a shame.

We have a guy in our club who rides with a gun in his Camelbak. It's a large one. The Camelbak that is. I have never seen the gun in the 6 years we have ridden together, but I like knowing he's got it, just in case.

Hinesville has gone to s**t, and Savannah isn't that great either, and I tried riding on the country roads in Jesup and almost got killed. I have a little Taurus .380 and a gun permit to make me feel safer.

Also, do YOU think he was justified?

Fair question.

It's a tough answer. I don't live in an area where I have to even wonder if I should carry a gun on my bike rides. I can't even imagine what that must be like. Which speaks directly to justification. For me to comment on another's decision and whether or not they are justified requires a level of empathy that I just don't have here.

I'm a pragmatic pacifist.  A pragmatic idealist. I can wish and want for a society where this stuff doesn't happen ... where 15 and 16 year old kids haven't been forced into a place where they feel the need to mug cyclists for whatever reason they come up with. Or where a 65 year old athlete feels he has to protect himself on a beautiful ride. I can wish for it but realize that we're not there.

That the reality of our situation requires him to protect himself from those kids who feel forced into initiating that confrontation. And I'm fine with calling it a requirement. Is that the same as a justification?

Fred D - 2012-01-30 4:02 PM Ok, so trying to stay on the reality of this situation, how would it have been better if he wasn't carrying? I am assuming we are accepting that the guy still gets punched in the face and kicked and mugged (and maybe worse). How would not carrying make this a better situation?

We wouldn't be discussing a lost life. I think that would be better. The cyclist wouldn't be left wondering, probably for the rest of his life, if there was a different answer. I think that would be better.

I think that's where we disagree. We might well be discussing the loss of life if the cyclist. And perhaps the next one that came along too.

Perhaps. We just won't know. That would be a shame too.
