Welcome! Not based in China but lived in Beijing for nine years (as a distance runner, in my pre-tri days) so if you ever want to vent about it......I understand!  There are several people on BT based in Shanghai but I haven't heard of triathletes in Beijing. Kudos for tri-ing there. I know the weather and traffic must make it difficult. Hopefully you live near a gym and pool!

Hi Jeff,

Glad you have access to some facilities there. I lived in Beijing (with a one -year break 1998-1999) from 1994-2003.  At the time there were some runners and local clubs, but nothing for biking or tri that I recall. I developed pretty severe asthma (had it low-grade as a kid but seemed to outgrow it by my late teens) there, and my guess it was related to running outside in the pollution and probably several nasty bouts of the flu. Take care. In retrospect I'm not sure if running in BJ aided or damaged my health and performance-- the latter hasn't been the same since!

RE Bintan--the PM start enables you to do the run as it's getting cooler and (for BOP) dark. Also, because it's Saturday AM, some people have to take the ferry over from Singapore in the AM if they can't fly into Singapore the night before (like me--some unlucky folks can't get time off work LOL)! The swim is beautiful and normally calm, the bike is hilly and brutally hot (I ran out of water last year), the run also quite hilly. It's a great race, overall, just hard.  It was nearly 100 degrees at the start last year.

Happy trails and best wishes for Bintan. It's logistically really hard from here and very close to my first HIM, so I'll probably skip it this year.
