I'm registered, I'm pretty certain Kendallf is also in. If you add this as one of your races it should list other BTers participating.

This is a great course, closed since it is in the military base. The challenge will be dealing with the heat in August in FL.

I still don't have this one settled.  I had made a list of pros/cons doing HOT vs. Disney. 

turns out my parents, who called last night, may be coming here the weekend of HOT.  I"m about 3 hrs south of Jacksonville or so.   I read somewhere the closest hotel is a good 35-40 minute drive from the HOT site?   Disney rooms were 79/nite last time I checked.   Plus Tom's surgery coming up soon and he'll be off his feet for at least 6-8 weeks totally, and don't know how he's going to be getting around after that.   Too many variables for me right now.  I basically don't have anythign planned in stone after MPM-other than IMFL- but I do have a wish list, though.

NOw, how do I cram Oly training in four weeks when I've been doing itty bitty sprint training?   This is gonna be hell but also gonna be a great, fun trip!!

I had originally planned to do this back in early June when I started training...but I'm so scared...the farthest I've run is 4 miles...I have a sprint on August 6...so maybe I'll see how I feel after that??

How are the hills on the bike portion...I'm SO afraid of hills...does anyone know anything about them? If its all downhill, I'm so there

As I've said in other posts, this is a great event...closed course, very nice lake swim & not overrun with participants however, it will be HOT. They have plenty of aid stations on the run...you can do it!

As for the bike, I would classify the hills as rollers & nothing drastic. It's a great cycling course & most of it will be flat.

Come on out & do the race, just be sure to prepare well for heat & loss of fluids due to temps.

Thanks so much Peter...I LOVE LOVE LOVE hot, I'm from south florida, near Miami, my parents never had a/c, so I got no problem with it...today I biked in 90 degree weather, and it felt great (kids dont try this at home)

anyways...

rolling hills are ok, and flat I can go forever...when its rolling, the downhill lets me recover enough to "carry me through" the uphill...when its just up and up and up...ouch!

I did rolling hills today and they went fine (good in fact!!)...I hate when its uphill for miles, my legs go crazy (burning pain)...but, then again, I'm not exactly doing this to win races, so I can go as slow as I want

I'm really thinking about it...I think I'll probably sign up this week, and then just have no choice but to do it...that always seems to be the best way for me

I just want to say that I've done an Olympic this season, darn it!!

Is anyone else doing their first Olympic with this one (and go really slow)?

Oh my!!

Ok, you talked me into it...I just signed up!! I also signed up my husband (he doesn't know this yet)

I'm scared...but I've been training so well for the sprints, I think with 31 days left I SHOULD be able to do the Olympic...

Does anyone have any tips...for the sprints I've besically been doing the race distance over and over...for this one, should I do the same?

PS-Am I able to ride the bike course before the race...I'm only in Gainesville, so its not a long drive, and I'd feel a lot more comfortable on the bike if I knew the course...

Glad you'll be joining us! 

My suggestions for the training: Start now, building your distances each week up to a week prior to the race. If you're running 3 miles now, for your weekly long run, move it up to 4 then 5 & 6 over the next few weeks. Same with the swim & bike...ideally you want to eventually train beyond the race distances but don't add too much volume too soon. Try to include some shorter, higher intensity (build each week) workouts in each discipline that push your cardio system i.e. intervals.

I would also suggest a BRICK of say a 20 or 30 mile bike/2 or 3 mile run at the least 2 weeks out but no closer to the race day to start to get the feel of the Olympic distance.

You don't have enough time to really train to "tear it up" but you have time to train to make it through that distance...Oh, don't forget to have a good hydration plan to deal with the hot & humid conditions...best of luck!

Do you need to have a nutrition/hydration plan for the Olympic? Do you have any suggestions...

On the sprint that I have done, I just ate/drank afterward...so might need to revise that...

Stay hydrated the night before & hydrate well pre-race with an energy type drink. For me, it's a 2 bottle bike ride...1 bottle water w/electrolytes, 1 bottle Hammer Gel w/water. Most likely I'll also down 2 gels, 1 around mile 5 & another around mile 20 or so. That's 44-48 ozs of fluid & more will be needed during the run...drink at every aid station.

They will have a bottle exchange after lap 1 & I'm guessing I'll take that too. Drink during the ride but don't overdue it near the end or your belly will be solshing around w/fluids on the run...not real comfortable.

One thing I'm doing this year is keeping a bottle of ice water at transition for T2...I want to a cold shot to cool the core & control the heart rate before the run (pour over the head b4 going out feels great).  I cramped near the end of the run last year & obviously want to avoid that again.  HTH

Yes, taking a drink without swerving and taking out the people behind you is a GOOD THING. Electrolytes are needed to keep your blood chemistry in line and most sports drinks have some included in the mix. If you're a heavy sweater, it sometimes helps to use something like Endurolytes, which are salt tablets with some electrolyte content.

I'll be doing the HOT also and my family should be volunteering; come up and say Howdy. FWIW, I have been doing Olympic distance races this year using only Gatorade and then water on the run..it's working for me.

LOL, you mean the other competitors might apprerciate that...HAA!! I was thinking of splurging and getting some aerobars (don't have them) with the drink w/straw on it...I'm just not sure if I'm going to be able to get that thing off my downtube, it is a tight fit!! Or maybe the water backpack?

I'm not a huge fan of gatorade...but I have a bottle of raspberry gu from hammergel, is that the same thing?? Also, I sweat like you wouldn't believe, drenched, sweat flowing into my eyes, everything...would you suggest the electrolytes...I'm not the best at listening to what my body needs, it just gets mad at me and tells me that its not going to do what I want it to do (and that's the end of the discussion)

I'll definitely say "Hi" if I can find you...my husband is coming too, this is the first race that he's nervous about...he's just naturally incredibly good at these things!!

That's how my body works under these conditions, others work differently. I just want you to be prepared & enjoy the race because it really is a great event. Not many triathlons are this well run & not overrun with athletes...the closed course is very nice, not something you often find in a tri.

I would come out and ride the course Saturday afternoon, if we have a bunch of people who'd like to do so. Rolling hills is probably over-stating it; if I recall correctly I wouldn't characterize anything on the bike course as a "hill". I just went and read the post on the race web site; looks like that guy wants to ride at 4:30? You can post here, PM me or email [email protected] if you want to do this.

I would LOVE to have dinner with a whole bunch of people who are going to be going through the same torture I am the next day (haa!! I'm so scared!!)...would need to drop my (and my husband's) bike off in someone's room though...if that is ok...we live in Gainesville, so we are just going to drive out on Saturday and Sunday (its only about 45 miles)...

Anyways, the people on the message board at the race website say 4pm, do you guys want to meet at 4:30 instead to separate us BT (And I'm really a beginner on this Olympic thing) from the other groups going out to ride? I know that I can handle the swim and the bike, but rolling hills are still worrying me, I get that burning in the muscles when I ride the hills on Hawthorne, but I can do the flats forever...so I'm really curious to see what the rolling hills are (I'm afraid that your perception of rolling hills is probably very different from mine!!)

Don't know of any places to eat around there, those are not very big towns...best known as speed traps...
