I take about 300kcal/hr on the bike.  I usually take  Hammer Perpeteum as my nutrition but I ran out.  I decided to try Powerbar energy gels since they were available at the grocery store.  I put these in my water bottle and mixed it with water.  I was actually impressed with the taste and they seem to provide me with more energy/endurance.  Does anyone else mix there gels in waterbottle? I can't do gels alone but somehow I can tolerate it when its all mixed up.

Yep. IMSG I had 7 GU Roctane's mixed with water in a bottle on my bike. I find it's not only convenient as you get gel and water mixed in one but it evened out my energy over the course of the ride. I have always done this, learned it from my Mom.

Works well depending on the gel.  Hammer gel specifically says it can also be used watered down, while some thick gels (ex. GU Chocolate Outrage) probably won't dissolve well.

Some pros use 4 gels in a flask topped off with water just to make it flow a bit easier.

Yeah, I mix Hammer gel with water in my Camelbak for biking and running, especially during the hot Arizona summers. I love the raspberry flavour, and I buy the gels in bottles as it's cheaper.

These are great! You can take gel or water or both whenever you need it.

Yes I mixed 7 Gus in a water bottle in a torpedo set up in my last him. Think it worked great but be carefull not to swig it like regular water or you may take in too much too fast. My race was 2 loops and I put a black line on the bottle to be certain I only finished half on the first loop and half on the other. With all the excitement I over did it and suffered for about a half hour on the second loop.

By the way you may need to give it a littleextra shake before drinking.

I started doing this back in March.  Straight gels make my stomach unsettled for 15 min or so and having them in the water eliminates that feeling.

So...the ratio is about 7 gels per standard water bottle?

Depends on your distance and energy needs.

When you take gels, you are supposed to take them with water.  So diluting them 'in advance' is fine.  The advantage in not doing so is that it is easier to carry concentrated calories and pick up the extra water to dilute it as you go.

I do this all the time on my long runs.  I mix a 50/50 mixture of water to Gu (or homemade gel).  As an earlier post mentioned, it makes it easier on my stomach.  On the bike, it makes it much more convenient than trying to rip open a gel packet.  Also don't have to worry about what to do with the trash.

I've been training this season with a flask on Sat. rides, I put in 3-4 power bar gels and a little water. I like the easier aspect to it, just stick it in my back pocket and take a swig throughout the ride, I feel like I get more even nutrition that way.

It's also easier to keep track of how many you are having, having them mixed can make that a bit more challenging. What I do is put in a little more gel in the bottle then i would normally have seperatly as insurance.
