+1 on LAVA

InsideTriathlon would be #2

Triathlete is now written for beginners (written at the same level as Bicycling).

Inside Triathlon. LAVA has too many ads.

My favorites in order:

1. Lava - focuses almost exclusively on Iron distance racing - which is not surprising as it it owned by Ironman
2. 3Go - Really like the in depth stories in the issues that I have read.
3. Inside Triathlon - great pictures, but expensive. More like a coffee table book than a mag. High quality though, thick paper, glossy pages.
4. Triathlete - as as has been posted several times, it really is aimed at beginners. You gotta love the annual swimsuit issue though!!

I haven't read a triathlon magazine in a while. Is there one that is more like Running Times as opposed to Runner's World.

I like Triathlon Plus. It is from the UK and has some great articles and training plans in it. I subscribed to it on my IPad.

I subscribe to all: Inside, Plus, Lava and Triathlete.  I don't mind the ads so much.  Cool to see what is new, etc.  Especially the UK magazines.

My wife (not a triathlete), hates LAVA.

Says its total geekfest... and the most boring magazine I get.

I like the pictures   Cool

They are all pretty darn good. The level of production and most of the level of reporting has gotten better in the last decade. It had to as media evolved.

That said, advertising still heavily influences editorial content. Welcome to the world.

I'd love to see a day when editorial gets a little "edgier" and reporters really do reporting and digging and telling a story over time. I don't think this media can afford to support that, and readers may not want that type of story.

Triathlon does not yet have it's "Krakauer". Matt Fitzgerald is close as a writer, but readers might not be ready for the harder stuff.

One of the best articles I ever read on Ironman was an old article called "Ironwar" (or was it "Blow Up"?)about the Dave Scott/Mark Allen duels in Kona published in Outside magazine during the '90's. It was gritty and real. The photography gives me chills to this day. The lead photo, splashed across two pages, showed a grossly wilting Dave Scott deep in the Kona Shuffle passing a sullen Mark Allen who was, at that point, walking and staring directly into the 400mm lens from across the road with sunken, bloodshot eyes. It was combat journalism. Amazing reporting.

Editors need to tell their writers, "Bring back blood" sometimes... Just sometimes...
