Subject: RE: Best Triathlon Magazine? They are all pretty darn good. The level of production and most of the level of reporting has gotten better in the last decade. It had to as media evolved. That said, advertising still heavily influences editorial content. Welcome to the world. I'd love to see a day when editorial gets a little "edgier" and reporters really do reporting and digging and telling a story over time. I don't think this media can afford to support that, and readers may not want that type of story. Triathlon does not yet have it's "Krakauer". Matt Fitzgerald is close as a writer, but readers might not be ready for the harder stuff. One of the best articles I ever read on Ironman was an old article called "Ironwar" (or was it "Blow Up"?)about the Dave Scott/Mark Allen duels in Kona published in Outside magazine during the '90's. It was gritty and real. The photography gives me chills to this day. The lead photo, splashed across two pages, showed a grossly wilting Dave Scott deep in the Kona Shuffle passing a sullen Mark Allen who was, at that point, walking and staring directly into the 400mm lens from across the road with sunken, bloodshot eyes. It was combat journalism. Amazing reporting. Editors need to tell their writers, "Bring back blood" sometimes... Just sometimes... Edited by Tom Demerly. 2012-05-24 7:18 PM
