Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I can't believe that I opened the news this morning and read THIS story. This is my daughters elementary school. I am appalled that I have to hear this through the news, and that a teacher would be teaching this kind of behavior. I asked my daughter about this boy who is a grade younger than her, and she admitted to me that she knew this boy who would sit near them at lunch. She then informed me that the kids who were in kindergarten and first grade all knew about the punishment this kid received and she never told me. I am shocked! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() When I was in grad school, my wife worked for a day care where this happened. There was a hell child who was always out of control. The owner took the child, and another who had been spit on, and had the victim slap the spitter in the face. The mother of the spitter/hell child pulled her child out of the daycare. The director did not give her escrow money back, citing the contract for short notice. The mother sued in small claims court. The claim got noticed by People's Court producers, and they were called to go on. My wife was taken along as a witness, and now we have video of my wife on national television being bleeped of one of 7 of Carlin's famous words, making Ed Koch raise his eyebrows. This was about 14 years ago, and the boss lost the case. She was so insane, she acted like she won. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Who in their right mind would think this is a) a good idea? b) legal? c) a good way to prevent bullying? While the parent might be to blame for not teaching their child that bullying is wrong, the teacher needs a slap up the head as well. |

Iron Donkey![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For the sake of argument, did the slapped kid have a bad past and was a bully? Did he have a "record" or a "rap sheet" a mile long of being a little terror, and then nothing ever was done about it then a mild scolding? I agree that this was just a stupid punishment and quite extreme, but, maybe it'll make the kid now think about acting out on someone again (if he has in the past). I feel for his friends that knew better and had to do the slapping anyways. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This story got me thinking...has the "spanking machine" been banned? back when I was a kid, if somebody screwed up, didn't pay attention, didn't follow rules, etc., the kid would have to go through the "spanking machine." Everybody lined up and the ne'er-do-well crawled between all the kids legs who proceeded to give the kid a whack on the butt. It didn't go on at school all that much, but I remember it being quite popular at the YMCA programs. (on topic, instead of giving the teacher a smack, I think a pink slip and a "do not return to teaching" note would suffice...regardless of whether the kid truly was a bully...which he could be/have been) |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm curious what a good punishment would have been. Should they sit in the corner with a pointy hat that says bully? It's got to be so frustrating to teach these days when you can't punish students and you get no respect. It seems like bullying is a big problem, but it doesn't sound like there are many acceptable solutions. MyMom always tells a story that when I was little there was a bully in our class who would pull the girls hair etc. The teacher ran out of options and put me next to him ( I was very small and quiet). She told my mom that he pulled my hair once and I jumped up stomped on his foot super hard and yelled don't you ever do that again. We ended up sitting next to each other for the rest of the year and being friends. She told my mom she forgot I had an older brother at home. She was pretty impressed. I'm sure if this happened now I would probably be expelled and it would be in the papers. |

Has to be relevant somehow and not just done to be done because, well, it just had to for no reason. Disagree. |

I bet Jack Handy was never bullied.

It is irrelevant because it is not about the bully. The teacher was an idiot for this idea, but even worse then that was involving the other children in this. What was the lesson here? "He is a bully, so the way to take care of this is for the whole class to gang up on him and be violent. Let's all be bullies!!!". And then to tell the kids not to mention this to their parents?
Sorry, doesn't wash. If my child was in that class, I would hope that he would have the courage and integrity to refuse to participate in this abusiveness, and if the teacher were stupid enough to tell my child to hide this from me, that the child would ignore this stupidity.
And then I would do everything in my power to make sure that the closest this idiot teacher got to a school was while driving past it. |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It is obviously an awful thing to do to a child. I do not condone any type of corporal punishment. I think it does speak to a larger problem though about how schools handle, or refuse to handle, bullies. Bullies, even young ones, are handled with kid gloves time and time again and it needs to stop. There need to be real consequences for children who bully and that is not happening in our schools. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Was the parent notified that their kid was being a bully and causing problems prior to this? I get that this was a terrible idea, but if the teacher had tried everything else what would have been the better option? |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() r1237h - 2012-06-20 1:19 AM I agree. And would like to know what teaching techniques were used previously with this boy. This teacher was clearly at her wits end and out of ideas. However, that is no excuse. When she got to the end of her rope it is time to use other resources. At my sons school one kid was shadowed by the counselor all day which is so not cool. Another kids Mom came to school and sat next to him all day. There are always options.1stTimeTri - 2012-06-19 9:52 AM r1237h - 2012-06-18 5:38 PM 1stTimeTri - 2012-06-18 12:04 PM For the sake of argument, did the slapped kid have a bad past and was a bully?
