I liked him in the Wild Bunch and the Vikings.  A very good actor and a Navy Veteran.

Anything he was in was very good.

I discovered him when I saw Emperor of the North, where he played a merciless railroad cop who kept Hobos off the freight trains.  I can't remember who played the hobo who killed Borgnine, but I sure remember Borgnine. I was maybe nine or ten.

My kids knew him has the voice of Mermaid Man from Spongebob.  They are alos getting a good dose of Tim Conway as Barnacle Boy.

RIP

Great character actor and great guy.

He had a big attachment to the city of Milwaukee here. For year, he used to serve as Grand Marshall of our famous Circus Parade, and he'd dress like a clown to lead the wagons through the city streets on a big march to the lakefront.

He was also pivotal in saving Kurt Russell in Escape From New York.

Man, do I really have to tell my boys that Mermaid Man is dead?

RIP, Ernest. You've earned you Krabby Patty.

Looks like the "in Memoriam" slideshow of the Oscars is going to be a bit longer of people I know this year...

I used to watch McHale's Navy and always had a good laugh, and then Mermaid Man happened!

wow, I forgot about that one...he was a mean SOB in that movie.  Didn't he have some kind of weapon attached to a chain that he would let rattle underneath a moving train to try to whack any hobo holding on underneath?    Was it Lee Marvin who played the hobo?

Navy vet and honorary Blue Angel.

Probably most here are too young to remember it, but 'Marty' was, and is still is, a great movie.
