I wonder why we don't already know the name, nationality, schooling history, credit rating, and marital status of the driver as well as all the passengers in this tragedy. I find it interesting that this has not become front page news on every news agency in the world and the entire news sections haven't stopped everything else to work on this.

Yeah, it's amazing this hasn't halted the news cycle for every news agency on the planet while we find out where this miscreant bought the truck, what model it was and why we don't have laws in place so he couldn't have bought it.

Yes, I'm annoyed at people who only believe it's news when they can make political hay out of death.

Well, what size was the gas tank? Only coyotes and bank robbers need gas tanks over 10 gallons!

Yeah, yeah, yeah :P

Yeah, it is sad that we only hear certain "types" incidents. While both are tragic, and the truck killed more people, it was only a vehicle accident and vehicular deaths don't sell as much as mass shootings. I didn't hear anything on the TV news, but hear about the truck accident on my local sports radio station, at least they go a little deeper.

I also saw this and said to myself "Yup"

Really? I seem to remember a mass shooting at Ft. Hood, Texas, by an Arab-American who had been in recent communication with a high-ranking member of al Qaeda. And yet much of the mainstream media did everything possible to downplay that connection and ties to terrorism and play up the shooter's alleged mental illness.

Had he driven his Ford pickup truck intentionally into a crowd, killing 12 and wounding 58, we probably would've heard more about it. But even in a truck, that's quite a feat. Trucks don't maneuver as well as an assault rifle with a 100-round magazine.

Nope, even when the guy drove into a day care center in CA and did pretty much that it wasn't all news channels all the time and was barely a blip on the news radar after the first day's cycle.

(edit) Now that I just glance around for it I find there really isn't ONE instance of people driving into day care centers. One even has them setting it on fire.

I consider riding in the back of a pickup stupid.  All these people made a choice to do something stupid.  What did they expect would happen if there was a car accident?

The people at the movie were not doing something stupid.  They were sitting in a chair watching a movie.  These people did not have a choice.

That is why this is less of a story in my opinion.

Just another group of immigrants headed to the big city to join the work force and integrate into our society. A pick up full of people is a pretty common sight here in South Texas. It is the lead off story for the local news stations SA. I only hope the driver survived so he can be charged.

And this is where if your not on the border, then you don't really hear about this stuff. It's swept under. Everyone else just doesn't see and understand what goes on down here.

Well, I think the survivors should sue the Ford Motor Company and get these pick-em-ups recalled because a "...tire on the truck blew out".
Heck, even Ford can't provide their own safety rating!

I guess it also depends in what market you are in.  Most of the victims in this accident will be confirmed as illegal immigrants, so you will find more detailed information on spanish lenguage news channels than regular ones.

At least in South Florida, which has a predominantly hispanic population this incident made the morning news and was one of the leading stories.  I would assume that in other news markets where hispanics are not a big demographic, it would go largely unnoticed.

Really, though, comparing a car accident to a mass murder is reaching, at best.

There was no intent in the car accident. It wasn't meticulously planned. The driver didn't buy the vehicle for the sole purpose of murdering and/or wounding dozens of people. In fact, in this case, the CAR did kill people. Or the tire that blew out did. That's like saying every car accident in which someone dies or is injured is an act of murder or attempted murder. Ridiculous.

The driver did survive and likely will be charged with 13 counts of manslaughter or something and will serve many years in jail, but there was no intent. Unlike the loon in Colorado.

I have no idea about the legality of the people killed but considering where it happened it is not out of line to assume illegals. If so, and if the driver knew and was assisting then the driver should be charged with 13 counts of 1st degree murder. Death directly attributable to the commission of a crime is felony murder in most or all states.

TX law:

PENAL CODE
TITLE 5. OFFENSES AGAINST THE PERSON
CHAPTER 19. CRIMINAL HOMICIDE
Sec. 19.01. TYPES OF CRIMINAL HOMICIDE. (a) A person commits criminal homicide if he intentionally, knowingly, recklessly, or with criminal negligence causes the death of an individual.

(b) Criminal homicide is murder, capital murder, manslaughter, or criminally negligent homicide.

Sec. 19.02. MURDER.
(a) In this section:

(b) A person commits an offense if he:

(3) commits or attempts to commit a felony, other than manslaughter, and in the course of and in furtherance of the commission or attempt, or in immediate flight from the commission or attempt, he commits or attempts to commit an act clearly dangerous to human life that causes the death of an individual.

(c) Except as provided by Subsection (d), an offense under this section is a felony of the first degree.

Still, we need to know where he bought the truck, where he went to school, how he got hold of those tires and who his 3d grade teacher is!

Yeah you could be right. I recall coyotes (if they were illegals being transported) being charged with murder after the people they were transporting died in the desert a while back. I think it would be fitting -- this may dissuade other would-be coyotes from doing something so reckless, stupid and illegal.

Ha I bet you could find that. Don't we have some LEOs on BT? Surely they could do some searching!

The government needs to step in and ban high occupancy vehicles, as they pose an obvious danger to society.

Also as a native born Texan it is not unusual to see the passenger capacity of a given vehicle to be pushed well beyond its normal limits especially as you venture further south.

Well it is "built Ford tough".  Glad it wasn't a Chevy - the carnage could've been worse.
