I drink lactose free milk and when I drink chocolate milk, it hurts my stomache.  I understand many people use chocolate milk as a recovery drink.  Is it the same to put chocolate syrup in white milk???  I already bought a thing of syrup so hopefully the answer is yes!

It's simply an optimal carb/protein ratio that's easy to take in.

You can get it done a variety of ways, syrup and milk being one of them.

tkos - 2012-09-02 4:13 PM Essentially it will be the same thing. But understand that Chocolate milk isn't a must to have after a workout, it is just an easy way to get calories (carbs and protein) after an event. Orange juice and a ham sandwich will do the same thing.

But is sure is good!Laughing

AFAIK there is nothing (besides the makers of recovery products and the milk industry) that says there 4:1 or 3:1 carbs to protein is optimal. Just that a couple of studies showed that athletes who took in some protein and carbs after a workout (which I believe was in the 4:1 ratio) recovered better than those who consumed just carbs or nothing.

After my first half marathon I chugged a box of chocolate milk, they had them sitting on ice looking so delicious. It was not so delicious when it came back up 10 minutes later..... :-(

not so great for recovery...

AFAIK what is AFAYK is correct.

And yes, chocolate syrup goes nicely with almost anything proteinaceous.

Well I drank lots of milk anyways, so when I found out it doubled as having a good fat/protein/carb ratio for recovery it was just another excuse to keep drinking it :D

I don't worry about recovery that much my body usually feels top notch to take on the next workout just by my regular intake of nutrients at breakfast lunch and dinner. I'll usually have some yogurt or a glass of milk after a workout just for that "golden hour" protein thing...

White milk generally has a 3:1 carb/protein ratio and as long as you get some protein in you after a workout, the carbs you eat in your regular meals will probably suffice to get your muscles back to working order. Unless of course you do a 3 hour workout completely exhausting your carbohydrate stores in your body. Then you need a little more oomph.

I've never seen a 3:1 carb/protein ratio in regular milk.  Usually in the milk I drink it is 1.5/1, so really by adding chocolate syrup you are increasing the carbs (sugar) in that ratio to 3:1 or even 4:1.

Just think of the plain milk as your protein source and then the syrup as your sugar/carb source.  Like others have said you can accomplish this in all sorts of ways and with many other foods.

listen, the best way to make chocolate milk is to take milk and cocoa powder and sugar put it in a blender. Figure out your own ratio for chocolately perfection. You are welcome.
