Subject: Pancake Crisis ... help? Please?

Being the intelligent soul I am, in order to save space in my teeny fridge-top freezer box, I took two different kinds of pancake mix and one of all-purpose flour out of their boxes and just crammed the bags in the freezer.

Even more intelligently, I threw the boxes away and didn't mark the bags.

I cannot remember which is what, what brands the two were, or whether they were just-add-water or needed oil and eggs, too.

Do I just need to do some pancake-making experiments and give whatever doesn't work out to the dogs and cat?

Well, I think I would be able to taste the difference between flour and pancake mix for sure...I know what Jiffy tastes like!

As for the eggs/oil...there aren't many pancake mixes that are "just add water"...and I don't think adding egg/milk/oil in somewhat small quantities will ruin the results.  You would be more likely to ruin it by only adding water or milk to a recipe that needed eggs/oil.

So, I would taste test to figure out which is pancake mix then make pancakes using half milk half water and a single egg and a tablespoon of oil....

This is very sage advice. Thanks Jen. And right, what's the worst that happens? I get protein pancakes!

Flour is pretty bland.  Pancake mix that requires eggs and oil will have flour, salt, and baking powder in it.  You might distinguish the salt/baking powder compared to plain flour.  Pancake mix that requires just water will have the other stuff plus egg protein and some oil, so it'll be clumpier than either other mix with a more complete flavor.

You can add egg and oil to some mix.  As long as it isn't plain flour, you'll end up with regular or extra-dense pancakes.  If it is regular flour, you won't see any bubbles in the batter, so add some salt and baking powder.

Pffffttt! Heck with determining what is what... just find a huge bowl, mix it all together, add water, milk, eggs, oil, butter and perhaps some of that taco seasoning. Throw in a huge pan and cook until something blows up. I'm sure the inhabitants of the funny farm will have no trouble helping you lick the exploded batter off the floor, walls, cabinets, ceiling, etc.

Dang... now I want pancakes for supper. Geez!

I like your style.

I ran out of stove gas the other day, so I was considering baking the pancakes in my small electrical toaster oven, except I had a weird feeling ^^^^^that would happen.

I'm just going to wait 20min until 6am and order pancakes delivered from McDonald's, as usual.

Their pancakes here are AWESOME ... fluffy, not rubbery, and all a little different size and color so while the batter is stock they're still made by hand on a grill. Good enough to eat plain!

Whether or not to call McDonald's for delivery pancakes.

They're actually very good.
