My wife has pepper spray in her purse, used to have to walk through the park to get to school. Biggest difference I can see is with pepper spray you only have to be within 10-15 feet to hit them with it. With a stun gun you have to be within arms reach. However I would assume that a stun gun has better stopping power than pepper spray. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() for stun guns I have never used one on someone but since I had to carry one for a college job with campus security I did have one used on me once so I would know what it feels like. The same with pepper spray. For the stun guns be sure to check local rules and regulations as they sometimes differ on what is legal or not legal to carry. For pepper spray most anything these days in my area is legal however, pepper spray is not a precicion weapon and you will just as often get yourself somewhat as get your target so be careful with it. There are lots of threads about dogs when running/biking on BT if you search for them they give some good advice already. As for creeps, if they are that big of a concern, find a different place to run, join a gym, or buy a treadmill? |

Also it has not just the bigger range but a bigger area and re-usability. A dog won't run around it to get to you. But if you miss with the stun gun you might have a problem. |

This is probably the best reason for pepper spray. You can continue to spray at your intended target while its moving wether its a person or a dog. If you miss with the stun gun or taser type weapon you're kinda screwed. |

![]() | ![]() Correct me if I'm wrong, but pepper spray doesn't work on someone who's hopped up on meth does it? I think that was one of the drawbacks. Another being that if you don't note the direction of the wind when spraying it, you gas yourself. In the corps, if we were going to use pepper, we had to have it used on us... PS is like CS Gas on steroids. Luckily, I didn't get tazed. It's better than a stick and a gun has many drawbacks. Not the least of which is setting it down somewhere. I know PS works on dogs and bears (as per Outside Magazine). Maybe a hat that says "I'm packing a Smith and Wesson!" would help deter weirdos. |

Sure it does. But "work" is relative. They can't see, but they don't quit as easily. PCP is worse....they also can't see, but they don't care. Still, it's good when they can't see.....then you can hit them with something else....like a big stick. Sometimes they like that too, that's when the tazer comes out......nobody likes being electrocuted......no matter what they're on. BUT.....since the OP and most people don't have to fight these idiots, just get away from them....nobody who has been sprayed could keep up with someone running away.....bet that. I've been increasingly concerned about both creeps and loose dogs as I'm running (and sometimes even while biking), and I started looking for pepper spray today...which led me to think about a stun gun instead...which led me to think that I know nothing about either! So...do any of you? I carry oc spray with me every day at work and when i bike and run. Cabellas in town has a great selection of sizes that are easy to carry.![]() |

![]() Here is a site for sabre that has the stuff we use. I have had a couple of big dogs come after me and it's put them in reverse very quickly. We have the model #P-22 0C ,,,, 22grams They have a couple of options, a little Velcro strap so it fits and stays in your hand and a pocket clip thing like a pen clip. I've used the pen clip on my tri bike by taking off the arm pad putting the clip under the pad and the pepper spray going under the metal part of the arm pad, works a lot better than i thought it would. Anyway that size is very easy to carry and seems to be quite effective. We've both unfortunately had to use it and it's very easy for it to get on your fingers, eventually you will wipe your face,,,, and get some in your eyes.,,, Oh, don't forget to put the arm pad back on before you go ride. there are a lot of other styles/systems that Sabre offers as well. I like the pepper spray better than the Tazer option, less liability, less of a threat needed to pull the trigger between the two. I would suggest that if you do have to use even the pepper spray, you should contact the local PD to file a report as a way of CYA. Good luck and welcome back!! |

I don't know what your use of force policy is, but ours has Pepper Spray right after soft-hand controls....as a way of reducing injury down to nearly zero. It's worked great. But we sure end up spraying alot of people. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Both my wife and I carry a stun gun, purchased off of e bay. It is 2.4 million volts and just the crackle of the electricity bolt is enough to make someone rational jump back. The only unfortunate part is that you have to touch them and I don't really want to get that close to an assailant if possible. It is the size of a cell phone and also has a flashlight on it. |

Have you tried it on yourself? Some of those "million volt" deals are virtually useless and easy to fight through. Most people who would attack you are not rational by definition. It is my experience that a "stun gun" is not even close to pepper spray for incapacitating someone. Tazer is another thing altogether....but a stun gun is not a tazer. True. Pepper spray does not work on people using meth, cocaine, crack cocaine and even some people who are mentally disturbed I seen first hand right right through several sprays like it was just water being sprayed on them.b But I have also seen being using these same drugs fight through being tasered. |

For humans I've not been in that situation yet, I would have to feel as if I would be harmed if I didn't and they would probably have to be within an arms length if they were unarmed. Every situation is different but those are my guidelines. |

New user![]() | ![]() Here is my quick opinion. I have never had a stun gun used on me, but I have been both sprayed and tazer'd in conjuntion with Military Police duties. A tazer, if you hit your target, will incapacitate an assailent (I understand there are exceptions) and some of them even send out the charge for 30 seconds. The purpose is to hit the target, drop the tazer, and get out of the area. It would be difficult to hit a charging dog with a tazer. For endurance, I would opt for carrying the spray. However, if someone is determined to attack you then spray will not stop them. I just don't think a tazer is practical for training. |
