Subject: Heated Motorcycle Gloves

Papa ratherbeswimming likes to ride his Vespa to work. Every year as it gets colder, his freezing hands stop him from riding in.

So, we're getting him some heated gloves for Christmas!

Any recommendations? I have no idea where to start. The coldest he'll ride in is probably the 20s (F).

Price isn't really an issue - my many sibilings and sibiling-in-laws are all willing to chip in for the right pair.

Gerbing. Though the more important question is just what his bike can handle (power-wise) and if he'll want to be plugged in... A heated vest is a good idea as well.

Gerbing is what I have also.  But, as said above, make sure the charging system can handle the wattage of what you are buying and does it have the connections.  Otherwise, you will also be purchasing the connections from the battery to a switch and possibly a controller to control how much juice is being put into the gloves.  I also have a heated vest.  Planning on a rewire to the bike this winter to add a controller as they get too hot for me without the controller.

Good gift!!!

Leather or Synthetic?

Vest is a good idea, too. I'll see how much we end up spending on gloves - we might be able to do both. 5 kids + 2 kid-in-laws = a pretty nice budget for Christmas gifts.

All of the delivery guys here in Beijing have these giant "mittens" that actually attach to the handlebars and cover the grips and the brakes.   They are leather, and fur-lined.  They look really, really warm.   Now, they might need them like this because they get on/off quite frequently.   But it looks like a better solution to me.. and might be cheaper than heated... if you can find them in the US.

I would be surprised the Vespa could handle the load. My brother had a Honda Shadow & his heated clothes drained his battery while running down the freeway. These might be worth considering as an alternative

My father in law loves riding with his heated gloves. He has the Tourmaster Synergy gloves. He also has heated handgrips on his bike (BMW R1200GS) but I'm not sure if he uses both at the same time.

I believe they're called Hippo-Hands.

Another alternative is heated grips, as was suggested by GML. I have Oxford Heaterz, which replace the existing grips and have a four-level heat controller. Along with air deflectors, I'm good well into the low 30's and high 20's using regular winter gloves. I got them at Lockitt.com, and  they were something like $65 (three years ago). There are wrap-around pad-type grip heaters as well, though I've really liked the grips.

I don't have heated grips, but I have heard good and bad about them.  It probably depends more upon the personal preference of the rider.  Either way, I would be more worried about the electrical system of the motorcycle.  Hippo Hands will help, but then again, it may not feel comfortable either.  I would contact your local VESPA dealer and ask questions about the electrical charging system and see what it can handle before going to electric.

I had heated grips on my motorcycle as well, and had a friend install a toggle switch on my bike so that I could have them on different temperatures.

However, I would also recommend that you contact Vespa to find out what they say in terms of systems that the electrical system for a Vespa can handle.   Toasty warm hands are fabulous while riding - I hope it works out!

I'll verify the model of the Vespa with my mom and check out the electrical system.

Thanks for the input so far
